Novelist-turned-filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda (Still Walking, After Life) writes and directs this gentle comedy-drama based on Akimi Yoshida's manga Umimachi Diary. Three twentysomething sisters living with their grandmother outside of Tokyo receive word of their estranged father's death. At the funeral the girls meet their previously unknown half-sister, a heartbroken 13-year-old in need of some adult attention. The film is easygoing to a fault, but in simply focussing on serene daily life, Kore-eda is invoking the work of late master filmmaker Yasujiro Ozu (Late Spring, Tokyo Story, Floating Weeds). In Japanese with English subtitles. 126 minutes PG.
