The final film of cult/art filmmaker Andrzej Zulawski (Possession, La Femme Publique, Fidelity) this disorienting adaptation of the surreal novel by Polish writer Witold Gombrowicz is ominous, manic and lined with psychosexual eroticism. A failed law student (Jonathan Genet) and his fashionable pal (Johan Libeéeau) end up at an ominous guest house in France. There, the proprietor's beautifully depressed daughter and a facially disfigured maid provide some intriguing distraction. Hard to say what it all means, but it sure ain't boring. 103 minutes Unrated.
