The Handmaiden

South Korean master stylist Park Chan-Wook (Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Oldboy, Lady Vengeance, Stoker) crafts this sensual and slowly escalating crime drama. In the 1930s a Korean maid goes to work for a wealthy Japanese woman at her elegant and secluded estate--but she's secretly conspiring with a conman to defraud the woman of her large inheritance. It's a gorgeously lensed, magnificently overwrought Gothic melodrama about sex, violence, revenge and colonial rule. It's "inspired" by the Welsh novel Fingersmith by Sarah Waters, but the twisty, kinky, lurid humor bleeding off the screen is clearly all Park. In Korean and Japanese with English subtitles. 144 minutes
