Daughters of the Dust

Julie Dash's groundbreaking 1991 films gets a digital spit-and-polish restoration. The nearly ethnographic film traces the lives of a multi-generational family living in the Gullah communities on the islands off the coast of South Carolina at the dawn of the 20th century. At the time it came out, this much-loved indie drama was the first wide release film by a black female director. 112 minutes PG.
