The five films nominated in this year's Best Documentary Short category cover the serious topics you pretty much expect from documentaries. There's one on palliative care for terminally ill patients in Oakland, Calif. There are two about the war in Syria—one about a family that flees to German and another about a citizen's brigade that combs through the rubble after bombings to rescue survivors. One documents a 91-year-old Holocaust survivor who donated his cherished violin to a public school instrument drive. The final offering introduces audiences to a Greek Coast Guard captain caught in the struggle of refugees fleeing Turkey for the nearby island of Lesbos. Though the subjects are dark, the films manage to find the humanity underneath the numbing headlines.154 minutes Unrated.
