This obscure Swiss/French stop-motion-animated tale slipped into this year's Best Animated Feature category at the Oscars before even hitting theaters stateside. Now you can check out the oddball tale--based on a popular young adult novel--for yourself. The story concerns a 9-year-old boy who ends up in an orphanage after his drunken father pushes his mother down the stairs and kills her. Poor little Icare, nicknamed "Zucchini," sends regular letters to the police officer who rescued him and falls for a new girl named Camille. For a story so filled with tragedy and melancholy, this delightfully simple film is surprisingly cute and emotionally appealing. In French with English subtitles. 70 minutes PG-13.
