Wondering why times are missing?

Wakefield

Bryan Cranston and Jennifer Garner star in this odd film for writer-director Robin Swicord (The Jane Austen Book Club, Memoirs of a Geisha) based on the absurdist short story by E.L. Doctorow. Cranston plays the titular Howard Wakefield, an ordinary guy with an ordinary job and an ordinary life who, one day, completely vanishes. Turns out he's not missing, he's just given up on life and is hiding out in the attic above his garage, scavenging for food at night and silently observing his wife and kids as they adjust to life without him. Cranston gives the internal monologue-heavy role his all, and there are moments of bitter intelligence. But it's ploddingly literary and doesn't completely come to life on the screen. 108 minutes PG-13. (Opens Friday 6/16)
