Etoiles: Dancers of the Paris Opera Ballet

This arty, self-conscious documentary aims to shed light on the behind-the-scenes world of the Paris Opera Ballet. Ultimately, the film is less about the stars and more about what pushes these artists to compete in a brutal, physically demanding, dog-eat-dog world of artistic one-upsmanship. Think of it as Fame for snobs. Obviously, the film will appeal mostly to fans of ballet. Those who don't know a petit jeté from a petit four will be left in the dust. Director Nils Tavernier (son of noted director Bertrand Tavernier) captures some stunning performances (these dancers are some of the best in the world) and some memorable images, but doesn't manage to fashion a very strong narrative direction. 100 minutes
