Russian Ark

More like a symphony or a performance art piece than a narrative film, this experimental eyebulb-bender is breathtaking stuff. Russian director Aleksandr Sokurov takes his digital camera on a 96-minute, uninterrupted, single-take tour through the rooms of the legendary Hermitage in St. Petersberg--home to art, theater and generations of Russian aristocracy. Our guides are an unseen narrator and a critical European diplomat, who drift in and out of the hallways, galleries and ballrooms, while bouncing back and forth through assorted periods of Russian history. This dream-like journey doesn't exacty reward strict attention, but is stunning in its beauty and logistics. In Russian with English subtitles. 96 minutes
