The Cold Stuff— At this very moment, Albuquerque is exploding with smoothie-boba-snack places. It’s strange. Just take a drive around the Northeast Heights and you’ll witness it firsthand.

One of the newest examples is Euphoria Smoothies, on San Pedro and Paseo Del Norte. The franchise is based out of Canada and serves a menu of boba teas, little noshes like stuffed pretzels, and, of course, a variety of smoothies.

Airport terminal mainstays Smoothie King are finally jumping into the Albuquerque market with a spot on Juan Tabo and Montgomery. Let’s just hope the chain’s omnipresent vitamin aftertaste got lost along the way.

And while the business isn’t new new, independently-owned Aqua Station (Carlisle and Montgomery) is experimenting with boba teas, which is a new addition to the water store. They’ve even added couches and ambient house music so you can linger long enough to sample flavors like chrysanthemum and blueberry tea. (Thanks to
Alibi ad rep and died-in-the-wool snackaholic Katie Castro for the excellent tips!)

On the Back Burner— Two Fools Tavern will be closed until July 31, during which time co-owner Tom White will bring in traditional wooden seating made in the United Kingdom (complete with “fart holes”–an industry term, not mine!) and other authentic Irish pub touches. In the meantime, you’ll want to check out the new O’Niell’s Pub which juuuust opened near Central and Washington SE [see “The Dish,” November 24-30, 2005, for the exclusive scoop]. May the wind be at both your backs, laddies.

In related news,
Alibi food reviewer Jennifer Wohletz stopped by Cha Cha’s Tacos and Burritos (515 Wyoming NE, just south of Lomas) for a review not long ago, but was stopped dead in her tracks by a major remodel. Cha Cha’s will be closed for a few weeks, after which it will emerge with a new name. No word on whether the business is changing hands from its current owner, a firecracker of a Texas transplant (and one hell of a cook) named Marina “Cha Cha” Rodriguez.

Let me bribe you! Send your food-related tips to lauram@alibi.com and I’ll send you passes to Laffs Comedy Club or other goodies.
