..so why do we get our phone from our "wireless service provider?"

Because it's less than half price w/ the service contract.

Otherwise you got it from your broadband provider.
But you could get it from anywhere.

Also true. In my pre-wireless days I got another one from craigslist.
Which is to say, I configured my ubuntu machine into my wireless network.
It wasn't plug and play but it wasn't as scary as I thought, and it was educational! I learned how to ping the network and interpret the resulting info using the terminal. Pretty nooberish, but I'm still proud of myself.
