Wireless Providers (10)
  • Wireless Providers  [ Wed Oct 7 2009 7:10 PM ]

After three months in my house I've yet to purchase wireless. I thought I would get your opinions on where to go for that service.

In the Portland Mercury I saw a Comcast ad that offered wireless and a mobile broadband card for $49.99 a month, but I've never seen anything like that here. What do you guys use? Thoughts?

  • I use Qwest  [ Thu Oct 8 2009 10:19 AM ]

And they've been great, absolutely no problems- until recently where I think they aren't allowing the viewing of certain youtube videos due to the amount of bandwidth they take up- (or something like that- and yes, I've updated my flash)

Obviously beware of any specials providers are running- they can double the price after the special terms are up. Be sure to ask questions about length of terms.

  • Just certain youtube videos?  [ Thu Oct 8 2009 10:33 AM ]

Like the ones with naked people in them?

  • Hmm, internet from Qwest ...  [ Tue Oct 20 2009 2:51 PM ]

Qwest and Comcast are both so evil, though.

  • Qwest ... wireless?  [ Tue Oct 20 2009 4:37 PM ]

We're talking DSL here, right? Wasn't the original query about wireless service?

I'm unaware of Qwest blocking anything due to bandwidth. I'd be surprised. Netflix instant-watching is a bandwidth hog and I haven't had any problems.

  • I heard that phrase ("qwest wireless") just yesterday  [ Tue Oct 20 2009 4:57 PM ]

I think it means a DSL+cellphone bundle. All the comm companies want to bundle stuff.

So you guys all use Qwest, but in DSL form, not wireless?

Are there any alternatives to the corporates? Does anyone have mobile broadband?

  • "wireless"  [ Tue Oct 20 2009 5:53 PM ]

i thought (incorrectly?) that most people used the term wireless to mean wireless internet usage. Whether it's via dsl router or not.

How often does someone at home (in abq anyway) use wireless that is not through a modem?

What are the alternatives in abq for wireless that is not DSL/cable? Since Jessica doesn't want to use the corporate choice of Qwest or Comcast?

I'm talking about wireless via a router, but I want mobile broadband too, and I want it for $49.99 like they were offering in Portland. If Comcast will give it to me for a deal, I'll take it, but I'd rather use an alternative.

  • I looked into this a bit some time back  [ Wed Oct 21 2009 11:43 AM ]

In my case Qwest DSL is the best compromise of price/bandwidth and I bought a cheap D-link draft-n wireless router. OTOH I do also lot of web browsing over the GSM/GPRS network. While it's only slightly more expensive it's quite a bit more slow and at the same time I'm limited to about 5GB data transfer/month. It's really hard to look a 5GB worth of web pages in a month so I've never hit that limit and I don't use my phone as a carrier modem for either of my other more capable machines that do consume shit tons of data on the regular.

That said, there are other alternatives from swcp or roadrunner but they are either really expensive or require you to already have a landline.
