Finally getting to high-five Emil Amos

A date with Om, Sir Richard Bishop and Jeremy Barnes

2013 Om/Sir Richard Bishop tour poster
    David V. D'Andrea

I'm a notorious recluse/hermit. I imagine myself as a postmodern Emily Dickinson—Gchat and Facebook message as letter, yo—but, as yet, I'm nowhere near the writer she was and probably more closely resemble late-stage Howard Hughes. As an introvert, one of the things I dig the most about social networking is the ability to share in the lives and experiences of artists I admire. I never thought I'd be able to tell Ann Magnuson that "Folk Song" will always be in my sonic top ten.

Another rad artist I "know" via Facebook is Emil Amos. When I heard Lilacs & Champagne, my mind was blown. I messaged him to that effect and he kindly requested my friendship. Amos, of Om, Grails and Holy Sons, is extremely talented and hella gracious, and I'm psyched to high-five him this evening. Transcendent drone-metal duo Om performs tonight at Sister (409 Central NW), along with guitar virtuoso Sir Richard Bishop and Jeremy Barnes. I'll see you there. Read all about Bishop in Siring Superlative Sound. Check out related A/V below. Sister • Om • Sir Richard Bishop • Jeremy Barnes • Thurs Feb 14 • 10 pm • $10-13 • 21+ • sisterthebar.com

Formed in ’79 while they were in High School, Fishbone were signed by a record label the same year they graduated. For over three decades, they have shared their unique punk/funk/ska hybrid with fans everywhere, breaking down racial barriers and earning street cred with punk rockers and rappers alike.

        Cold Lampin' With Camp Lo

New Year's Eve • Camp Lo

The '90s hip-hop reunion tour is in full effect. The next act coming to a venue near you is Bronx hip-hop duo Camp Lo. Sister (407 Central NW) welcomes Sonny Cheeba (Salahadeen Wilds) and Geechi Suede (Saladine Wallace) for a New Year's Eve fête. Celebrate old memories and make new ones as Camp Lo perform their 1997 album, Uptown Saturday Night. Honestly, the only song I remembered was its top hit, “Luchini AKA This Is It,” but it holds up surprisingly well in almost-2013. Local hip-hop crew Zoology, Nick Furious and DJ Wae Funky add to the festivity. Sister • Mon Dec 31 • 8 pm • $18 • 21+ • View on Alibi calendar

This week’s Flyer on the Wall juxtaposes soothing colors with a terrifying creature to promote Lovecraftian metal group Shoggoth’s full theatrical debut at Sister (407 Central NW). The Mayan calendar is ending, but Shoggoth plans to ring in the new era right. Mesa, Ariz. punk act Hate Everything and longtime Burque rowdy rock group Black Maria also perform. Winter Wonderland Fashion Show at the SUB tonight

Local retro-fashions boutique 66 Pin-Ups presents a very well-sponsored fashion show of retro styles this evening in Ballroom C of the Student Union Building on the main campus of the University of New Mexico. Reasons to attend: It's a benefit for Engineers Without Borders; beautiful women (and men) wearing nifty threads; Paul Higdon's much-lauded Range Box from Alibi's 2012 Operation Art Box will be used as a prop.

Just because it says Pabst doesn't mean there will be any

Of course after the show the Range Box will be returned to it's home at Sister Bar, where being surrounded by beautiful and handsome people is par for the course.
