The Bosque is closed
By Marisa Demarco [ Wed Jun 29 2011 8:56 PM ]
No one is allowed to enter the Bosque, the Rio Grande Valley State Park or any other Open Space area, Mayor Richard Berry announced today. The city is in extreme fire danger, and rain isn’t due any time soon. Police and fire patrols will scour the city’s wild areas, and anyone who’s caught violating the restriction will face a $500 fine and/or 90 days in jail.

Extreme fire danger in Albuquerque
By Marisa Demarco [ Mon Jun 13 2011 5:22 PM ]
There’s a drought. Fires rage around the state. That means if Burque starts blazing, outside agencies can’t come to our rescue.
Today, Mayor Richard Berry and Fire Chief James Breen upped restrictions in all municipal Open Space areas, effective at midnight. That includes the Bosque, arroyos and retention dams, among other things. The full list is available here.
Restrictions in a nutshell:
• No campfires
• No fireworks
• No vehicles off designated roadways
• No chain saws or other tools operated by internal combustion engines
• No combustion engines, internal or external, period
• No equipment that sparks
• No torches, welding or otherwise
• No camping overnight

BREAKING: Bosque Fire
By Marisa Demarco [ Mon Apr 5 2010 3:01 PM ]
UPDATE: Shortly after I posted this blog, I rode my bike into Barelas just north of the fire. The smoke was thick, visible in the neighborhood, and residents stood along the sidewalk with their shirts pulled up over their noses. The National Hispanic Cultural Center was evacuated earlier in the day, along with some businesses in the area and homes south of the NHCC. The fire encompassed about 40 acres, according to this KOB report that was updated at about 5:30 p.m.

Education Building in the Bosque Loses Funding
By Marisa Demarco [ Thu Feb 18 2010 12:08 PM ]
The session officially ended minutes ago, but because a budget fix hadn't been found for the state's $500 million shortfall, legislators will be seeing each other again soon.
But they did pass a measure this morning that takes money from projects around the state to try and shore up some reserves. They pulled in $130 million that way. I was just reading through this long list of projects that are losing their funds. And I found the Legislature is sucking back cash flow that was set to "plan, design, construct and equip an education building at the Rio Grande Nature Center state park in Bernalillo county."
Remember that story? A few weeks ago I wrote about some neighbors that were pretty bummed about that 5,700-square-foot building going into the Bosque.
Browse that list yourself. So many things are getting the ax.
