Fried Tofu and Waffles

Exploring the secrets of Banh Mi Coda

Banh Mi Coda, a Vietnamese sandwich shop, deli and tofu house across the parking lot from Talin Market, is what you'd expect to find in a big-city Asian district. It's the type of place that requires a certain percentage of its clientele to already know what is going on, because while the bright, spotless space is attractive and inviting, the myriad of unusual dishes and absence of explanation can be disorienting to the uninitiated.

Get Your Schwervon: Hoverboard • Schwervon! • The Blackout Disciples • Get Action

Blackbird Buvette serves up an inaugural springtime rock and roll bash on its tiny back porch. It’s pretty cramped, but it’s as close to a DIY basement show as you can get … while having drinks served. This show is a who’s-who of the best garage rockers still standing (no overdoses or wheelchairs). Drum legend Joe Bolt debuts The Blackout Disciples' dark and dirty rock sans evil posturing. Other Dirty Novels alums—Dandee Fleming and Brian Keith—and Demarcus Sumter (St. Petersburg), Billy Miles Brooke (Pan!c) and Ben Woods (Porter Draw) make up the group. Punk and roll outfit Get Action (formerly Riley Switch) features bad boy Bill Bunting (Ten Seconds to Liftoff), Scott Brown (Song Thing) and Ashley Floyd and Jeff Jones (both ex-Gracchi). Newcomers Hoverbourd tag themselves as surf-indie-dance-rock, and that works for me, especially with a horn thrown into the mix. Despite bountiful local talent, I’m most excited about Schwervon! from Shawnee, Kan., by way of New York City. Now in their 13th year, guitarist Major Matt Mason and drummer Nan Turner’s music ranges from sweet jangle-pop to ear-shattering racket. Keep a few bucks stashed in your wallet to score Schwervon! merch, including the brilliant, new Courage and '09’s sweet and lilting Low Blow. The Case of the Disappearing Taqueria

Rocka Taco demands to be seen

Grass and bare feet. Firecrackers and accidents. Tacos and beer. Here is the short list of classic summer duos. It's not summer yet, but close enough … the heat’s a-coming. Time to pinch shut our eyes, pretend we aren't high desert dwellers and reacquaint ourselves with our favorite street food from balmy, beachy Mexico.

Rowdy’s Dream Blog #288: A woman takes my tacos away.

G and I are in Taos at dusk. We watch a jeep Wagoneer perform a jump from a dirt road off a hill and over some water. We then go to a fancy Mexican buffet. There are circular bas-relief carvings in the patio floor and walls. I get a plate of tacos. G gets green chili enchiladas that I had not noticed. Our waitress, a gray-haired woman, takes my full plate from me, ostensibly to bring me some enchiladas instead. She does not return. I try to hunt her down. I find some of the other wait staff and describe her to them. They point and I find her hiding behind a door. She gives an unintelligible excuse. I go up to the pretty cashier, who informs me that they are now closed. I go upstairs onto the roof. The food is now gone - only empty tables and steam trays remain.
