Rowdy’s Dream Blog #221: A restaurant job.
By Brutus De Cervantes [ Sat Oct 15 2011 6:01 AM ]
My friend has given me a job at his restaurant. He takes me to the kitchen on my first day to introduce me to everyone. I meet a pretty waitress in white who is getting ready at a table. Around the corner everyone else has been lined up. My friend begins the introductions. I extend my hand at the right of the line, but am instructed to start at the left. There is a short Indian woman, a short Hispanic guy I had already met, two Hispanic cooks who spoke no English, and several others. I'm not remembering names. Each rushes off as soon as they shake my hand. Several sit at a break table playing a video game, with the screen up on the wall. The game allows you to pick a song and make the figures on the screen do funny dances to it. They are also able to dress the figures in different ethnic costumes from around the world.

Goodbye, old house
By Elise Kaplan, fearless intern [ Fri Aug 19 2011 12:45 PM ]
Casa Vieja's 300-year-old walls succumbed to old age earlier this month. Owners Josh and Kate Gerwin closed their doors until further notice after a building inspector deemed the collapsing adobe a hazard.
The charming 18th-century structure is one of the oldest in Corrales and has housed stage coaches, military headquarters, tightrope walkers and a general store. For the last 30 years it has been a restaurant.
Since buying the restaurant in 2009, the Gerwins' food and drink have been well-loved by Alibi readers. In last year's annual Alibi poll, Casa Vieja was voted Best Restaurant in Albuquerque. Josh was runner-up for Best Chef and Kate won Best Wine Steward by a landslide vote.
The restaurant's emphasis on locally sourced ingredients made it a favorite with foodies, and the eclectic cocktail and wine lists made even the pickiest drinker happy. The menu reflects the slow food movement by embracing organic and sustainable fare that's never seen the inside of a can.
The Gerwins have not revealed their next step after the condemnation of their building, but here's hoping they bring their culinary creations further into the city.
The ballot for the 2011 Best of Burque Restaurant Poll will hit stands next week. Voting starts on alibi.com Wednesday.

By Ari LeVaux [ Fri Jun 24 2011 1:07 PM ]
On Saturday, June 25 (aka tomorrow) I'll be interviewed on "Break the Chain," a weekly radio show about the independent restaurant scene in Albuquerque and New Mexico. The host, Ryan Scott, has warned me he also wants to talk about the local cage fighting scene. Tune in to 1550 AM between 3-4 pm, and don’t be afraid to call in with your questions, comments, constructive criticism, restaurant tips, or anything else food-related that’s on your mind.

There’s Always Feces in Something
By Marisa Demarco [ Thu Jan 7 2010 12:51 PM ]
No really. Once or twice a year, a super gross food story comes out.
Well, 2010 brings us feces-related bacteria in soda fountains at fast food restaurants. Microbiologists found that 48 percent of sodas from fast food soda-dispensing machines contained coliform bacteria, ”which is typically fecal in origin”.
Read the article. There’s a whole bunch of other bacteria in soda fountains, like E. Coli. No one has yet postulated why soda fountains are so gross, or if making a “suicide” at the 7-11 down the street from my middle school will really turn you insane.

Keeping Tabs on Restaurants
By Laura Marrich [ Mon Dec 7 2009 11:28 AM ]
Maybe you ate a questionable burrito. Or you just want to make sure everything checks out, sanitation-wise, before you try a new restaurant. Even better than skimming Red or Green reports, the city has a searchable database of every restaurant and bar in town, with the results of every inspection, emergency call-in and follow-up visit right there. Try it, it’s fun!

Best Breakfast Overall
It's easy to find a place that serves toast and coffee in the morning, but true breakfast havens are treasured commodities in this city. Weck's prides itself on its "scratch-made" buttermilk pancakes, chile-doused papas and "full belly" meals that will not only keep you sated all day but will bring you back with the sunrise. Plus, it has gluten-free options. (CC)
Hey, guess what? Relish’s Uptown store is now open for dinner. Think about how much you love Relish’s sandwiches—how its chefs knead out creamy globes of mozzarella fresh each day, how they take time to hand-crank black pepper onto each sliced-to-order tomato. Now imagine the care and attention they lavish on every step of assembling your beloved, award-winning sandwich and what kind of magic they could work on a meal like dinner. Now go get the car keys, because your fantasy is a short trip away from becoming a reality. (LM)
No Bones About It
While there are still some out there who have yet to be converted to Team Tofu, there are plenty of us who have, and we know a perfectly done piece of tofu is a magical thing. At Fei’s, everything is vegan, so tofu isn’t the poor stepsister of meat dishes; it’s frikkin’ Cinderella. (EAH)
