I like the quirky atmosphere and the breakfast food. Having never eaten at any other time of day, I can't speak to the rest of the menu but the pancakes and omelettes and Southwestern breakfast entries are generally pretty good. Nothing too surprising, but if you want a solid place to take guests for Sunday brunch, the Range is a good all-around choice. Mind you - it can get pretty noisy on Sunday mornings.

If you're looking for a cool, quintessentially New Mexican setting, Church Street Cafe is hard to beat. If you're looking for really good New Mexican food however, you might wanna go elsewhere. I've been three times and each time was disappointed in the food. In general, it's somewhat bland and lacks that certain "something" that makes New Mexican food so great. Even if the food at Cecilia's was the best on the planet, it wouldn't warrant how outright rude the staff is to anyone who isn't a regular (I'm so with you, Jdogg). We went and the waitress and owner were both extremely bitchy to us, but every time someone they knew walked through the door, they nearly pissed themselves with joy. To add insult to injury, the food was blah--the adovada was the wateriest I've ever eaten and the prices were high for the quality and the portion size. I'll never never NEVER go there again.

I grew up on Albuquerque and had driven past Buffet's like a million times w/out going in. I finally did a couple months ago and it was...weird. Seriously, it was like the place was plucked straight out of the 1960's with it's strangely empty, sterile white environment. I mean, See's candies cultivates that oddly hospital-like atmosphere too but Buffet's feels kinda shopworn, like something you'd find in a rural, nearly-deserted town in the middle of nowhere. That said, the chocolate was pretty good - we got a chocolate marshmallow, a dark chocolate bar and a few bon bons - but not good enough to warrant another trip into the past. After years of living away from New Mexico, I moved back and one of the first things I wanted was a green chile cheeseburger and a cherry shake from Lotaburger. Ah...memories of walking to the Lotaburger during high school... The burger was a little dry and not as spectacular as I remembered it but I like that you can get green chile on anything you order and the cherry shakes are still as good as I remember. I have fond memories of the Frontier and all the breakfast burritos and western hashbrowns consumed during my undergrad days at UNM. I still love to go back there to people watch while grabbing a bite and a cup of diner-level joe. Last edited [8/23/10 12:47 PM] Re: The Cube

Man, for my money, the Cube is the best BBQ in town. The brisket is tender, the mac n cheese is creamy and the candied yams are to die for. It's not the most atmospheric place in the world, but the service is friendly and the food will definitely scratch that comfort food itch. Re: Flying Star Café

I really enjoy going to the Flying Star for desserts and coffee. The main menu is a bit uneven - the Southwest Benedict is good stuff. If you order a salad though, get the dressing on the side because the salads are often seriously overdressed.

For german sausage lovers, this is definitely a place to make a pilgrimage to. They custom-make sausage sandwiches It's too bad though, that once you get there, the place is tiny and cramped and there's no place to sit and enjoy your sandwich. |
