Denish, who ran unopposed for the Democratic nomination for governor, spent about $8.6 million after her re-election as lieutenant governor in 2006, according to numbers compiled by The Associated Press. Martinez, who defeated four Republican challengers for the 2010 GOP nomination before squaring off with Denish, spent about $6.75 million after entering the race in mid-2009, according to campaign finance reports. However, both candidates spent roughly the same amount during the primary and general election periods."
