Re Hunger strike  [ Sat Sep 19 2009 8:29 AM ]

In the state of MO. an offender can be force fed after missing 21 meals. That is 7 days of no food or fluid. It can be instituted sooner if medical staff determines the offender is in mortal danger.

I work in a maximum security penitentiary and have seen some offenders who are determined to cause themselves harm. Mostly the reasons are not what could be called righteous. Reasons run the gamut from "I want to he transferred to another facility" to "My girlfriend/boyfriend/wife broke up with me. Now I have to wait 30 years to talk to her/him. I'm not sure they will still be waiting for me then."

I have yet to come across an offender who has claimed religious reasons as the reason for a hunger strike.

There are so many effective ways to get attention for your cause - for instance, hire an attorney or consult your legal assistants for help drafting the appropriate forms to have your day in court. Also there are groups of law students and professors of law will help you with your case on a pro bono basis.

Once thing is certain, a nasogastric tube while in four point restraints is not a good time.

Big Story With More Twists and Turns?  [ Sat Apr 18 2009 9:14 PM ]

Very interesting story. Seems like there is much more that could/should be revealed. While many seem to be focused on the interpretation of scripture, it would seem that the larger issue of the judge who adjudicated this case and seemed intent on "making his mark" on his career with this, his last case.

While it's sad to hear of a man-of-the-cloth perhaps taking advantage of these young women, stratcatz makes a valid point. The Bible can and has been used by many for as long as there has been more that one religion to prove points, by interpreting scripture to suit one's purpose. Unfortunately, it seems these young women had parents who were more concerned about Mr. Bent's interpretation of scripture than the safety and well-being of their children. Many atrocities have been carried out in the name of religion. I remain unclear why these girls needed to remove their clothing. Having witnessed "laying on of hands" I can't say anyone was nude. Only God, Mr. Bent and the young girls involved will know for sure what transpired.

Our legal system is the best in the world, but that does not make it infallible. That is not to say that I disagree with the verdict, simply to say that there seems to be more to this story that might change some minds. Ever heard of politics? Probably played a role in this whole sordid story. Perhaps at some later date more of this story will be known and we may all have a different feeling about Mr. Bent, the victims and the victim's parents. God knows parenting is the most difficult job in the world. Throw religion into the mix and the need to believe in your chosen religious leader to guide you in the ways of the Lord, and if you are inclined to let someone do your thinking for you, there is the potential unfortunate results.

I love Ask A Mexican!  [ Fri Jun 6 2008 1:16 PM ]

My daughter introduced me to this jewel on a recent visit home to her familia. I grew up in Las Cruces and mis abuelos came from Mejico legally a couple generations ago.

I had a mother who was first generation to be born in the Estados Unidos and a father who is a gabacho. I spent most of my growing up years wondering what that made me. It wasn't until I met my husband that I finally knew.

He dubbed me his little halfback and our children our beautiful quarterbacks. Since my husband is of German descent I guess our children are technically beanerschnitzels!

Humor makes the world a better place. It's even better when you can educate people at the same time.

I understand your hesitancy regarding dad's creations, but he's progressed nicely! We had another of his casseroles tonight and it, too, was yummy! Love your blog!
