let's apply faulty logic with foxy mcclouds  [ Fri Nov 6 2009 2:17 PM ]

using faulty logic, (even with the bullshit caveat)

I would catch a lot of shit for using the name Nidal Malik Hasan

We have a president with the name Barak Hussein Obama

Therefore we as a people are able to transcend racist assumptions.

You're tiresome beef with racism clouds your vision and causes you to make illogical arguments.

culture  [ Fri Oct 23 2009 6:32 PM ]

And if they ever decide to abolish Lucky Charms as a result of Irish discrimination, I may have to start some sort of protest to prevent that from happening. What a horrifying depiction of the future.

Your point is sorta shaky in that you already referred to yourself as a person of "mixed Irish descent". The heritage that you affiliate yourself with here seems to be more of hobby than something you actively practice.

My culture is not a hobby. I actively participate in language revitalization. I take part in my tribal elections. I am connected to my home.

When your culture is part of who you are, when your people did not emigrate here and are NOT trying to assimilate, you understand this issue.

You clearly do not. Culture is not a cereal box that you protest.

grammar  [ Fri Oct 23 2009 3:55 PM ]

when people start pointing out grammar mistakes it usually means there's nothing more to say. personally i don't think grammar is that big a deal or a definition of intelligence when you can use spell check. i'm more interested in ideas.

a modest proposal for a mascot  [ Fri Oct 23 2009 1:19 PM ]

I get what they're doing, but aping something that offends you in a reciprocated way justifies it? What the hell school of thought is that?

A group of people is offended by a particular team name, so to protest the depiction of their race with feathers, etc, they turn right around and depict the stereotypical white man and now it's funny because they were second in line to do it?

Sorry, I don't buy it. If we're striving for racial equality in this country, it has to be exactly that, leaving absolutely no grey area or someone's going to get left out, it's as simple as that. Just as a Native American has a right to be offended by a depiction of their race in the hands of others, a Caucasian person now has the right to be offended by their portrayal of white people on merchandise. Am I missing something here?

I think you illustrate the whole point of why the whitey mascot was created. Doesn't feel to good does it? Now you see how we feel. The creation of such a mascot does more than words seem to be able to do. For some reason people just do not GET it.

Though this may not be technically satire, Jonathan Swift did it best when he wrote "A Modest Proposal".

clearly  [ Fri Oct 23 2009 12:07 PM ]

The only thing missing from that stereotype is a bottle of whiskey.

Wah wah wah. Wah wah wah.

(;_;)

Where's my social justice? We Irish have our history of discrimination in this country, or haven't you seen "Far and Away?"

Yes it's very clear how much you identify with your Irish heritage, as a "person of mixed Irish descent".

i agree two wrongs don't make a "white"  [ Fri Oct 23 2009 10:26 AM ]

Errrr...right?

While it's not right to caricature certain races for the purposes of entertainment, as it is very primitive, there are also some severe double standards here. Political correction seems to nullify the true definition of equality, which is what it's intent is in the first place, right?

I think the point being here is that sometimes you have to illustrate the ridiculousness of the concept for it to be fully grasped. It's not so much revenge as it is an example. cartoon vikings, miniature irishmen in green suits, as well as dolphins, lakes (the lakers) and jazz music (Utah jazz) are not really comparable either.

fightin' whities  [ Thu Oct 22 2009 7:09 PM ]

The Fightin' Whities have been around for awhile. I agree it's an awesome concept.

The argument that these sports franchises usually make is that they are honoring us or that it is tradition. Both arguments are essentially faulty. They do NOT honor Native people by creating caricatures of us and just because something has always been done does not mean that it is correct to continue doing it. Slavery would be a tradition if that were the case.

no kidding  [ Tue Aug 4 2009 9:59 AM ]

that's really lame. why even write about it in the first place? i don't even care about the food poisoning links. I want to know what not to eat and where not to go. at least give us a hint dude...

actually...  [ Wed Jun 17 2009 11:49 PM ]

I worked for the Albuquerque Public Library system for a time. Unless you're being a complete jackass you can get away with just about anything. A librarian shushing is mostly a stereotype at this point and it actually can be pretty stressful. In my first three months on the job I made a phone call to the APD to report drug dealers about to stab our security guard.

so weird...  [ Sun Jun 14 2009 11:55 PM ]

...that i read this blog this weekend before i read it here. we went to cecelia's and i have to say that is was mighty tasty. it was busy and the waitress was awfully tense on account of the business, but all in all i would say i had a good meal and a reasonable price. it seemed a bit scattershot and warm (they had the fans on instead of any type of cool air) but the food and service was cool. just remember that when they lay the bill on your table, you go up to the counter to pay. if you wait they will not pick it up. you are expected to be as knowledgeable as the regulars in this place.
