GROUNDS TECH

The University of New Mexico Gallup Branch Physical Plant Department is seeking applications for an experienced Grounds Tech. The Grounds Tech performs routine grounds maintenance that may include watering, raking, mowing, weeding, planting, and trash/litter removal. Operates UNM-owned vehicles to perform duties inclusive of the North Campus. Operates powered grounds equipment/machines. Snow removal as required, and maintain powered grounds related equipment such as lawn mowers, weed eaters, snow blowers, etc. The position involves extensive physical activity of strenuous physical work including heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling objects up to 50 pounds. Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions. Majority of the work is performed outside and in all types of weather. Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, snow removal, direct, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises at times. In addition, this position is subject to shift work, which may require early mornings, evenings and nights, weekends and holidays. See the Position Description for additional information. Conditions of Employment A valid New Mexico driver's license will be required if a motor vehicle must be operated on the job. This position is represented by a labor union and is subject to the terms and conditions of the CWA Collective Bargaining Agreement. Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check. Minimum Qualifications Less than high school; at least 6 months of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis. Preferred Qualifications 2-years of experience in tree care, gardening, snow removal, irrigation/drainage, outdoor lighting, and heavy and small equipment operation. Must be able to lift heavy objects, with assistance when needed, and do physical labor for long periods of time. Must be able to work outdoors. Must be able to use all hand tools associated with landscaping work. Must be able to work productively and independently with minimum supervision. Must be able to stay within the department guidelines for appearance, attendance, and position critical standards.
