The International Advisement Specialists are responsible for the planning, management, execution and evaluation of the International Student and Scholar Services program for the Global Education Office (GEO). International Advisement Specialists in GEO must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents to meet federal requirements for reporting information in the Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). International Advisement Specialists provide the training and expertise to ensure compliance with US laws related to the approximately 1400 foreign students and 200 scholars in F-1 and J-1 immigration status at the University of New Mexico each year. They are required to act as Department of Homeland Security Designated School Officials (DSOs) and Department of State Alternate Responsible Officers (AROs), and represent and speak for the university in matters related to F-1 and J-1 visa types. DSOs and AROs have a potentially large degree of legal liability in working with F-1 and J-1 visa holders and are responsible for maintaining data integrity on this population of individuals as well as educating themselves on regulatory matters affecting this population. Responsibilities also include advising and training UNM students, scholars, faculty and administrators on immigration and other relevant government regulations, UNM academic policies and administrative procedures, cultural adjustment, and services and resources available at UNM.
