TECHARI

“Techarí” - Friday & Saturday, October 3rd and 4th, 8pm National Hispanic Cultural Center, Journal Theatre Flamenco takes you into deep trance as the National Hispanic Cultural Center and Casa Flamenca present Jesus Muñoz Flamenco- Techarí: from the Gypsy language of Caló, meaning to be “free,” as in the state of being free, and not under the control or power of another. We explore Techarí through one of Flamenco’s most profound and mysterious palos (rhythms), a palo that was normally sung behind closed doors. A palo so potent, so profound and absolutely distinguishable that if sung during Franco’s period in Spain it could mean your immediate execution or forced exile. Rather than hide, some chose to express their intimacies, their pain, their sorrows and to live just one moment in time where they felt what it was like to be free, Techarí. The rhythm is Soleá. When a Flamenco artist hears the word SoleáA certain aire comes over their body. Profoundness sets in. The conversation goes from interesting to absolute. Soleá is so unique that its interpretative range is daunted by its simplicity. From extremely slow bouts and bursts of raw emotion to controlled virtuosic speeds, Soleá is one of the most complex and complete palos in its ability and emotional content of all of Flamenco forms. Techarí will take you on a journey inspired by Soleá reminding us of what it means to be free. What it means to let it all go. What it means to have and to be, Techarí. When: Friday and Saturday, October 3rd and 4th Where: National Hispanic Cultural Center, Journal Theatre Time: 8pm Who: International artists from Spain, France, Mexico and USA. Price: $35, $45, $55, Student, Senior, Children and Group Discounts Available Info: Director@Casaflamenca.org Website: http://www.casaflamenca.org Buy Tickets: http://www.nhccnm.org, or Box office: (505) 724-4771

MERCHANDISE

SISTER 09-25-2014 Merchandise is a band fighting against the easy categorization reserved for abbreviated biographies. The project is equal parts punk misanthropy, maudlin balladeering, fine art, low humor, classical study, psychedelic spacecasing, mad science and pop genius. Formed as a trio in Tampa, Florida in 2008, the band has undergone ceaseless revision and reinvention. After putting out numerous records and tapes on independent punk labels and touring the underground, the band truly hit its stride with the release of their second LP Children of Desire in April 2012. In addition to a very warm reception from fans, the record received praise from the likes of Pitchfork, NME, Spin, and numerous other critics and journals Lower make intense music. Seek Warmer Climes, the Copenhagen quartet’s debut album, sparkles with the harmonic dissonance and high-strung urgency of their underground music forebears. But Lower Adrian Toubro (vocals), Simon Formann (guitar), Kristian Emdal (bass) and Anton Rothstein (drums) also channel the romance and drama of great singer-songwriters, from late-period Scott Walker to Bryan Ferry. The result is a hugely ambitious and affecting rock album that enters deeply personal and unusual sonic and topical spaces. . . https://www.facebook.com/events/627540530700386/

EX HEX & SPEEDY ORTIZ

SISTER 10-10-2014 Doors at 8 PM Pre-sale tickets only $10! http://www.exhexband.com/ Ex Hex Bio: Ex Hex is what your older brother’s friends listened to. “Roxy Roller” and “Virginia Plain” rumbling from the Kenwood in the basement. It’s what your babysitters listened to, and it’s what stuck with me. Ex Hex is a power trio: guitar, drums, and bass. We are thrilled to have found a home at Merge. Speedy Ortiz Bio: From their start as a full band, Speedy Ortiz found a warm reception in the Bay State’s rock underground, from Boston’s basements to Western Massachusetts’ experimental scene. In March 2012, the band recorded and self-released a two-song single (“Taylor Swift” / “Swim Fan”) with Paul Q. Kolderie (Pixies, Hole) and Justin Pizzoferrato (Chelsea Light Moving, Dinosaur Jr.). Establishing both creative momentum and a fanbase earned through near-constant U.S. touring, they continued with the Sports EP, a loosely conceptual 10” released on Exploding In Sound that June. Their debut album Major Arcana, named Best New Music by Pitchfork, saw the evolution of Speedy Ortiz from a lo-fi project into a wholly collaborative effort, marked by Darl Ferm’s thick bass lines, drummer Mike Falcone’s boisterous fills, and the counterbalance between guitarist Matt Robidoux’s anti-melodic playing and frontwoman Sadie Dupuis’s angular riffing. The end result is a band able to distill their influences and impulses into something at once dissonant and melodic. For their upcoming Real Hair EP, Speedy Ortiz has teamed up with Paul Q. Kolderie once again, resulting in a collection brushed with effected guitars and pop-conscious vocals. Here Dupuis attempts to untangle concerns about misrepresentation of identity in four songs delivered with the band’s signature abrasive clarity. The band will support the EP on the road into 2014 with a January southeastern string of All-Ages shows with Boston friends Grass is Green, their first European tour in February, and supporting slots with the Breeders and Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks. https://www.facebook.com/events/535084253283733

ICEAGE / HELM

SISTER 11-05-2014 Doors at 8PM Wednesday, November 5th Pre-sale tickets only $7 ICEAGE BIOGRAPHY: Just out of their teens, it seems Copenhagen’s Iceage have only added to the anxiety and tension that made their debut album, New Brigade, so compelling. But now, they’re challenging their raging emotions instead of simply expressing them. You're Nothing, Iceage’s sophomore album, is the sound of a band pushing their singular mix of punk, Goth, hardcore, and post-punk to even further extremes. It’s overwhelming how many ways Iceage have found to write the short aggressive rock song. When you see Iceage live you get the feeling the songs are just about to fall apart before miraculously recovering, always rewarding you with a climax. This menacing energy is more forceful on You're Nothing. It is a more epic sound, like a rough sea. https://www.facebook.com/events/295276784005676

DEATH BY HAGGIS

By NM author Jay Cutts. Available at: https://www.createspace.com/4115240 or on Amazon. An Amazon Breakthrough Novel Quarterfinalist, Death by Haggis is a tongue in cheek detective novel inspired by the Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest for the "opening sentence to the worst of all possible novels." Until the day Jane Hamchester walked into his squalid office, the highlight of Detective Sam Barlow's life had been a particularly good tuna sandwich. Now he is charged with trying to save the life of the only woman he ever, uhm, thought was really swell. His only problem is that there are no clues, other than the nonsensical utterances of a dying man. Barlow's desperate search takes him first to Scotland and then to the Aegean. But time is running out. Not only for Jane but for the human race. Barlow's only possible hope lies at the bottom of an ancient cavern, a remnant from the time when a different kind of human populated the Earth, a kind of human that could have saved mankind. Alas, they are long extinct. Or are they? [email reply]
