Music to Your Ears

Win Something—There are few awards in the lives of many musicians. Aspiring local ones can expect shiny prizes like: crappy pay, excess drama, late hours and the occasional heckler. Of course, pats on the back are not the reason most of us are in this game. We do it because ... wait, why are we doing this?

Chief Beef and Emperors of Japan

The Atomic's got your Phoenix fix

Although they have nothing but kind words for a great many Phoenix bands, Stewart Alaniz of the prog-rock power-trio Chief Beef and Tony Poer of the experimental outfit Emperors of Japan are anxious to leave the confines of an overly saturated music scene in their hometown.

The Dodos

Spotlight

The Dodos

Complex duo form simple folk

It would be tough to call it straight-forward folk. But, for all of his sonic tinkerings, The Dodos frontman Meric Long has constructed tunes that are devoid of many bells and whistles (save for a few vocal loops) and have an unmistakable honesty and humility that's refreshing in a genre that has bred more than its fair share of uppity musicians.

Sonic Reducer

A Hawk and a Hacksaw The Way the Wind Blows · Breadfoot featuring Anna Phoebe Tea with Leo · Carey Ott Lucid Dream

If you’re ready to step out of the alt.rock music rut you've been stuck in for the past decade, The Way the Wind Blows is your first foot out of the hole. A Hawk and a Hacksaw draw from global influences (most notably Balkan) without making The Way the Wind Blows a one-way ticket to the old world. The Albuquerque-born duo masterfully interlaces delicate violin with the potentially overbearing cry of the accordion to create a lively, organic and entrancing experience. This isn't your momma's heavy-handed, new-agey folk—it's folk for the rest of us.

EVENT HORIZON (Friday, Apr 28)

Make Your Own Rock 'n' Roll

Nizhoni Girls • The Flossies • indie, rock • Midnight Stew • Nite Kidz • Lilith • shoegaze • Litter Brain

The poster for the concert happening at Moonlight Lounge on Friday, April 28, depicts a lonesome hogan placed in the midst of a black and white desolation. Flying out from a chimney on the traditional Diné dwelling is a plume of colorful smoke that names some of the bands that make that large sacred expanse to Burque’s west much more than a monochromatic desert. The smoky color of music pervades that realm, and now it’s drifting our way. With music by rez rebels Nizhóní Girls, The Flossies, Midnight Stew, Nite Kidz, Lilith and Burque’s own DIY punk powerhouse Litter Brain, this is going to be a concert guaranteed to give listeners a solid and soulfully sonic indication of how powerful the voices—and electric guitars and synths and drums—from our Native American neighbors and fellow punk rockers can be. The bands will be performing during this year’s Gathering of Nations Pow Wow to raise funds for the upcoming Asdzaa Warrior Fest. Join in on this rocking revelation for on only $5 and a valid 21+ ID. Doors are at 8pm; the righteous ritual begins at 9pm.
