Music Interview

Plants

Find inner peace through Photosynthesis

Light your frangipani-scented incense. Roll another blunt. Absorb into your blood the music of Plants. The Oregon-based psychedelic-folk group founded by Josh Blanchard and Molly Griffith-Blanchard are on tour with a musical acid test. Guitarist/singer/songwriter Josh spoke with the Alibi last week to give us a taste of just how sweet and dreamlike Plants will be when they hit the Atomic Cantina on Monday, Aug. 6.

Independent hip-hoppers find a home on the road

Who’s your favorite independent rapper? Name the last time you saw this beloved word wizard of yours in person, on stage, with other independent rappers. If you're speechless, you're not alone. Sure, you get your token emcee at Coachella or South by Southwest. You can even get whole festivals of indie hip-hop in New York, California and Cincinnati. But both take large lump sums and a trip halfway across the country. For far too long, world-class independent hip-hop has been inaccessible to most of the country.

Nedelle The Locksmith Cometh · Eastern Conference Champions Ameritown · Okkervil River The Stage Names

Scores of bad singer/songwriters have deflated some words: you, this, night, feel, love, city, asphalt, sky, heart, etc. There they lay, withered and shrunken, miserable and odorless—until Nedelle came along and filled some of them all back up with stunning song-poems. They're perfumed with her clear, sweet voice and interesting chords that slip through tracks like "I Hate a Mountain" and "Spell the Night Right." That’s not to say everything that spills from this pretty, little voice is pleasant and friendly. This bard's ready to dig into the dark bits when she needs to. [MD]

The Land Between Times

Castle • metal • Shoggoth • metal • SuperGiant • stoner rock • Jagged Mouth • metal

Neither Aleister Crowley nor George W. Bush will be around (maybe) but prepare to sharpen your horns and do some bidding for some badass folks who definitely aren't involved in the occult—the doom metal trio Castle enchants locals at the Launchpad this Saturday, March 4, with the doors to the underworld opening at 8pm. Joining the '70s heavy metal-esque group will be Burque inhabitants Shoggoth, SuperGiant and Jagged Mouth. Only vessels 21+ for this $8 show allowed.

EVENT HORIZON (Monday, Mar 6)

Bring a Tissue

Gaby Fuentes • Regulus • Tear Pressure • indie pop, punk

An up and coming local band I have been enjoying listening to is named Tear Pressure. I found out about them when I was wandering the local college campus and saw a flyer for a show they were doing at some apartment complex up on Copper in the Heights, yo. That was a decent show with an excellent barbeque and I felt like Tear Pressure was going to appear on the scene within the year. Now of course, they are playing their dirty and delicious, slithery and subtle no wave at Burt's Tiki Lounge on Monday, March 6, and as usual at Burt's there is no goddamn cover charge. Ever. I hear some daring lo-fi pop credentials being built on tunes from the band's latest recording, the Chill Ass EP—songs like “Quaaludes” and “All Moms Are Weirdos” that build intensity as they roll through cray melodic and stylistic changes. They'll be opening for math mastermind and CRTTRZ guitarist Gabriel Angel Fuentes and Austin indie taco-rockers Regulus, so be there.
