Loosening the Screws

Casual conversation with Those Darlins

The music of Tennessee quartet Those Darlins is like a freight train started in the ’60s and hurtled through the decades to 2011—picking up girl-group sound, garage rock, trash country, some chick punk and a touch of glam—before crashing into an American roots music instrument store. See them live at Low Spirits, July 26.

Christian McBride and Inside Straight

Bassist sweetens New Mexico Jazz Fest with acoustic quintet

The quintet of Christian McBride and Inside Straight delivers swinging, straight-head jazz of a very high quality, with an equally high feel-good quotient. Next week, for two nights at the Outpost, McBride and Inside Straight—with Peter Martin (piano), Jaleel Shaw (sax), Warren Wolf Jr. (vibes) and Carl Allen (drums)—will hit a high note in the New Mexico Jazz Festival’s impressive 2011 lineup.
Sax player Maceo Parker has collaborated with the likes of James Brown and Parliament Funkadelic. Parker plays at the free Route 66 Summerfest in Nob Hill on Saturday night.

Random tracks from Cultura Fuerte

Cultura Fuerte has been making Latin hip-hop here in New Mexico since 2005. On Saturday, July 23, the seven-piece releases its second album, Quiero Ser Libre. Ohm, Def Rare, Giz, Physics, NewMex.icon and Shakedown open the 21-and-over show at the Launchpad (618 Central SW) at 9 p.m. Cultura Fuerte members Marco Sandoval (percussion/vocals) and Andrea Serrano (hand percussion / spoken word) shared iPod shuffling duties, which resulted in the random tracks below.

EVENT HORIZON (Saturday, Aug 27)

(quiet) Night Out

SuperGiant • Russian Girlfriends • rock, punk • Lilah Rose • pop, electronic • Rueben Krussick

What's better than unplugging from social media? A lot of things, honestly. For example, Low Spirits is hosting an Unplugged Night this coming Saturday, Aug. 27, where musicians who normally rely on electronics (whether that's a MIDI board or guitar) perform, well, unplugged. Local favorites Joel and Jeremy from SuperGiant, Adam Hooks from Russian Girlfriends, Rueben Krussick of WholeHearted and Lilah Rose will be performing…

EVENT HORIZON (Friday, Sep 2)

The Treachery of Music

Dada Life • electronic, house

This is not a DJ duo from Sweden. Wait. No. Actually, it is. Sorry, I got carried away. Dada Life is one of the biggest DJ acts in the world. I don't really know what that entails, though, to be honest. It involves dancing, I think. And auto-tune. But I don't really care, because these guys are hilarious. Their logo is a champagne bottle flanked by two peeled bananas. They have press photos involving pastel suits and Sears family photo-style ambiguous cloudy backgrounds, and one showing member Stefan Engblom shoving an oversized piece of meat into member Olle Cornéer's straining face while giving words of encouragement. That's funny. And anyone that funny deserves a show of your support, which you will have a chance to display when they come to The Stage this Friday, Sept. 2 at 9pm. If you're over 21, get your ass down there and let these boys know how appreciative you are of their comic genius. Oh. And let them know you like their music (even if you're old and don't get it, like me).
