New Mexico
Hot Club of Cowtown

Music to Your Ears

Only 20 minutes east of Albuquerque (in the mountains where it’s 10 degrees cooler) Wildlife West is equipped with venue facilities and hosts regular events. Beginning on Friday, July 29, and running through Sunday, July 31, is the biggest of the year: The ninth Wildlife West Music Festival. The three-day fest features two shaded stages (attendees will not be sitting in the sun, promoters say) and more than a dozen performing acts of the acoustic persuasion—bluegrass, Western swing, old time and folk, to name a few.

New Mexico

The band—not our fair state

Last year the Alibi received a package containing a zia-emblazoned CD. This wasn’t unusual. Many proud local musicians use the symbol in their imagery. What was unusual was that the band New Mexico hails from San Diego. This does not follow protocol. After all, Kansas is from Kansas, Alabama from Alabama; Chicago (which plays live on Wednesday, Aug. 3 at Inn of the Mountain Gods Resort & Casino in Mescalero) is from Chicago and Boston from Boston. Even Europe is from Europe, and America is from America (well, mostly). Not since Asia has a musical entity been so geographically displaced from its chosen moniker.

You Can Have It All

On Saturday, July 30, Small Engine (1413 Fourth Street SW) hosts another cool show with an attractive flyer to accompany it. Kevin Greenspon and Ancient Crux from L.A. play with locals Dripping Rainbow and Gusher. Five dollars / 8:30 p.m. Some are predicting this to be a “serious-ass” event. (Jessica Cassyle Carr)

DJ Evan’s random tracks

Evan Langford is a DJ at Blackbird Buvette, managing the frightful monthly party known as Post Burial. Hear him play post-punk, new wave, disco, electro, glam and/or deathrock there on Saturday, Aug. 6, beginning at 10 p.m. I asked Langford to put his MP3s on shuffle. Below are the random results.

Danksgiving 2015 • Mondo Vibrations • Dre Z • Pocket Full Of Dub

Work up some post-Thanksgiving munchies or dance off your food guilt this week at Danksgiving 2015. Captaining the musically mind-expanding adventure will be the blazing reggae-rock of Mondo Vibrations. The talented pack of Burquenos is well-known in the downtown circuit of music venues and consists of Kenny Cernius (vocals/guitar), Shea Longi (bass), Kevin Sanchez (drums), James Sanchez (percussion), Mike Gerdes (guitar/synths) and Rick “Smirie” Gonzales (vocals/guitar/keys/melodica). Also on deck for the night will be the chill melodies of Dre Z, the stylings of Burque Sol and Pocket Full of Dub, to boot. Take your Friday night to a higher level for just $5 at Launchpad, where things will get lit at 9pm.

EVENT HORIZON (Tuesday, Dec 1)

Bloodsuckers Licking Your Ears

Vampires Everywhere! • rock • Consider Me Dead • Set to Stun

Metalcore masters Vampires Everywhere! will be rising from their decrepit coffins for a gig at The Co-Op on Tuesday, Dec. 1. The project of Michael Orlando, VE! are proponents of a sick sound that craftily combines aspects of goth, industrial and horror punk into a smotheringly propulsive sonic experience that can be freaky and frightening or acutely alluring depending on the internal chemical composition of each of their millions of stunned listeners. Check out the video for “Drug of Choice” for further evidence of the outfit's crepuscular commitments. Arizona electro-popsters Consider Me Dead and “post-sci-fi hardcore” trio Set To Stun (from El Lay of course) open. This all ages show at an alcohol- and drug-free venue costs $13 and begins at 6pm.
