The Final Sting

Germany’s foremost rock export performs one last high kick

For more than 40 years, Scorpions' career has spanned a vast breadth over rockin' rock’s subgenres. The band pioneered or played deftly through proto-metal, ’70s anthem rock, regrettable ’80s hair metal and the urgent whisper that is the power ballad. Now, after taking other bands to school for decades, the Scorpions makes one last pass across the world before calling it quits. The “Final Sting Tour” will be filling face holes in Albuquerque on Thursday at the Hard Rock Pavilion.
The Fireballs, from Raton, wrote and recorded the 1963 bubblegum hit “Sugar Shack.” The band will be performing on Saturday at the Rock and Rockabilly Pavilion at Sixth Street and Central at 3:15 p.m.

Music to Your Ears

Though Santa Fe de Nuevo México became a territory of the United States in 1850, six decades passed before it was finally anointed 47th state. Despite ongoing union-joining efforts on the part of the citizenry, the lapse was due to federal government reluctance—the inhabitants here were seen as uncivilized and just not quite Anglo enough—but in 1912 the state was judged adequately assimilated. This January, New Mexico observed its statehood centennial, and fiestas will continue throughout the year. One of the biggest will be effervescing in Downtown Albuquerque this weekend.

Jazzed Reducer

This week Mel Minter listened to the Chris Greene Quartet, Grégoire Maret and Jonathan Blake.

EVENT HORIZON (Friday, Oct 9)

Can I Get a Hallelujah?

Hozier • blues, indie, soul

You probably remember that in January a song filled the radio that made you say amen more than you had since going to church with your family as a child. Hozier’s “Take Me To Church” was in the top 100 singles in the U.S. for three weeks. His soft acoustic style paired with sorrowful crooning seemed to be just what the United States wanted and soon he started his countrywide tour. His show at Sandia Resort & Casino will be his smallest venue played. If you are in the mood for some romanticized angst or upbeat songs about awful things then this is the show for you.

EVENT HORIZON (Monday, Oct 12)

El Angel de la Musica

José González • indie, folk • Riothorse Royale

Heads up—an angel named José González drops down from heaven and lands at Sunshine Theater on Monday, Oct. 12. González's voice is heavenly and when combined with his soothing classical guitar melodies, causes elation of the senses and profound introversive relaxation (totally how angels should make you feel, from what I understand). González lives up to the hype, continually getting amazing album and concert reviews. He'll likely play music from his long-awaited album (seven years we've been waiting), Vestiges & Claws. Opening for González is Riothorse Royale. The duo create beautiful, kindred harmonies. For $22, this show is a promising break from everyday life and a much welcome ending to a Monday evening.
