Midnight Movies Celebrate St. Patrick with Leprechaun Double Feature

Alibi Midnight Movies is in an Irish mood this weekend thanks to St. Patrick’s Day. If you’ve had your fill of green beer and bad corned beef, stop by the Guild Cinema in Nob Hill on Friday or Saturday night for a double feature of murderous leprechaun action. First up is 2000’s Leprechaun in the Hood, in which Ice T battles an evil Gaelic goblin. That starts at 10:15 p.m. At Midnight, it’s 2003’s Leprechaun: Back 2 Tha Hood featuring more rappers-vs.-leprechauns action. A mere $8 gets you in the door for both films. We’ll be giving out free leprechaun hats while supplies last. Plus, our new sponsor Stranger Factory will be providing all sorts of magical doorprizes as well. See you there!

Juno duo return with the blistering black comedy Young Adult

The last time director Jason Reitman and writer Diablo Cody teamed up, it was for a little film called Juno. Four years later they’re back together for another drama-laced comedy, Young Adult. Perhaps the two have grown older and wiser. Perhaps times have changed. But the snarky, impossibly well-spoken wit of Juno has dried up, replaced by the cynical comedy of discomfort.

New Zealand writer-director Niki Caro and actress / fellow Kiwi Keisha Castle-Hughes last teamed on the magnificent 2002 drama Whale Rider. At the time, Castle-Hughes was a mere 11 years old. In the intervening years, she’s grown into a lovely young woman. As expected, seeing the two artists reunite is one of the small joys contained in the new historical drama The Vintner’s Luck.

Alibi Midnight Movie Madness returns to Guild Cinema this weekend with Human Centipede 2 (Full Sequence). This sick, twisted and quite funny sequel to Tom Six’s cult film from 2009 pours on the bodily horror and the self-referential humor. Seems an unstable fan of Six’s first film wants to make his very own human centipede in the “real world”—only he wants to one-up crazy Dr. Heiter and make a “full” centipede. This means kidnapping a whole bunch of unwilling victims—including actress Ashlynn Yennie, star of the original film! Screenings take place at 10 p.m. and midnight at Guild Cinema in Nob Hill.

Speculating on whether Shakespeare actually penned the plays for which he is justifiably famous is the academic equivalent of wondering if Elvis is still alive. Famous people aren’t allowed to simply expire—they must be resurrected via silly conspiracy theories concerning their life, their death and the veracity of both. Now, Roland Emmerich, the blockbuster filmmaker who gave us Stargate and Independence Day, weighs in on the Shakespeare conspiracy.

Whether they go by the name Sheen or Estevez, they’re part of a Hollywood dynasty. Father Martin Sheen has appeared in legendary films (Badlands, Apocalypse Now) and Emmy-winning television shows (“The West Wing”) and is a well-known liberal activist. Son Emilio Estevez is a popular actor (The Breakfast Club, Repo Man, Young Guns), a journeyman director (Bobby) and a former member of the notorious ’80s Brat Pack. The father-and-son duo have worked together a number of times over the years, but the two recently crisscrossed the country promoting their most personal project to date, a writing-directing-acting collaboration titled The Way.

Toe-Tapping remake of Footloose dances to a familiar tune

Footloose was always kind of a dumb movie. I’m not saying I and millions of other people like me didn’t love the film. I’m just saying it’s a corny construct, what with its twinkle-toed rock ’n’ roll rebel and endless music montages. But it succeeded thanks to one of its era’s most ecstatic pop soundtracks and the Reagan administration’s prevailing attitude of repression. Back in 1984, mere months before Tipper Gore founded the Parents Music Resource Center, it wasn’t at all far-fetched an idea that evil government and religious forces could band together to outlaw rock ’n’ roll. Back then, the plot to Styx’s 1983 concept album Killroy Was Here (a postapocalyptic world ruled by music-hating evangelical fascists) seemed unlikely ... but thrillingly plausible.

                            The Ides of March

Cynical political drama digs the dirt on our electoral system

“Yup. I slept with her too.”

We live, arguably, in the most contentious of political times. ... Granted, things were probably pretty argumentative up on Capitol Hill during the Civil War—but America didn’t have 24-hour cable news channels, the blogosphere and talk radio back in the 1860s, so the volume was considerably lower. Today, it’s turned up to 11, with Republicans and Democrats seemingly unable to agree on whether puppies and kitties are cute. (And subsequently, having every pundit in the nation turning “puppygate” into the next major scandal.) By all indications, the American public is getting pretty tired of it. As a result, right now doesn’t seem like the most advantageous time to release a film as heavily political as The Ides of March. Read Alibi’s review right here.
