The recent remake of Evil Dead was gory as hell, but largely pointless. After all, filmmaker Sam Raimi already remade Evil Dead. It was called Evil Dead II, and it was awesome. Join Alibi at Guild Cinema this Friday and Saturday night at 10:15 and midnight for a 35mm screening of the one, the only, the original Evil Dead II: Dead By Dawn. Tickets are $6 students and $8 general. There will be doorprizes from Stranger Factory and a special, limited-edition poster release courtesy of local artists Soto and Jon Sanchez. Posters will be for sale in the theater lobby, and we’ll be giving one away each screening. Be there or be dead.

The Dark Matters Film Festival Zombie Dance Party shambles into Sister Bar (407 Central SW) tonight at 8 p.m. The event promises lots of dead patrons and plenty of live bands, including Hoverbourd, Lindy Vision, Get Action, YOU and First Lovve. It’s the official launch party for Dark Matters—which unspools May 17-19 at Guild Cinema with more than 14 horror, sci-fi and dark fantasy films from around the world. There is no getting around the fact that no matter how much you popcorn you make, no matter how many times you take that “one last trip” to the candy table, no matter how many live-tweeting parties you view, the Oscars are just sort of boring. Over the last few years, the games have been running at around 4 hours. Add in 2 or so hours of pre-show-red-carpet-shenanigans and you’ve got yourself one freaking ridiculously long night.

And what better way to pass that than with a little drinking game? With the help of the folks at the Huffington Post, nextmovie.com, and a few ideas from my own little brain, I’ve compiled the official Unofficial Drinking Game for the 2013 Oscars. Hit the jump for prompts to keep your night interesting, informational and classy. And please, please, please … be responsible.

On the Red Carpet take a drink every time:

• A celebrity evades a question.

• Someone says they are "so excited to be here."

• A celebrity is photobombed.

• A celebrity is asked who they are wearing.

• You see a celebrity who brought a parent/family member as their date.

• Someone wears a truly hideous dress (yes, we'll leave that up to your own discretion).

• A man wears two-toned shoes with a suit/tux

During the Oscars take a drink each time:

• Someone thanks their parents and/or God.

• Someone acknowledges Meryl Streep.

• A loser begrudgingly smiles to the camera.

• Someone says they didn't have a speech prepared.

• The band tries to cut off someone's speech.

• Someone cries.

• A winner uses their speech time as a political/environmental/humanitarian platform.

• Someone mentions the Grammy wardrobe restrictions

• A cartoon character is shows wearing Oscar-worthy clothing.

Finish your drink if:

• Jennifer Lawrence wins Best Actress and the camera pans to Meryl Streep.

• Adele gets a standing ovation after singing “Skyfall.”

 

This day, we celebrate all things Lynchian. Whether your poison is his early experimental work (Eraserhead, The Elephant Man), must-see teevee (Twin Peaks, yo), the De Laurentiis period (Dune, Blue Velvet), the Wild at Heart era or his more recent work (Inland Empire, Dumbland), the ideal time to show your devotion to the auteur is his 66th birthday. Whoops. We inadvertently omitted capsule write-ups from our print edition for films opening at the Guild Cinema this evening, so here they be:

Actor Matthew Lillard (Scooby-Doo) tries his hand at directing with this coming-of-age comedy about a suicidal high-schooler who gets recruited by a druggy dropout to become the drummer in a punk rock band. Based on K.L. Going's 2003 young adult novel.

James Franco, Heather Graham and Lili Taylor costar in this drama about a troubled 19-year-old (Ashley Hinshaw from Chronicle) who moves to San Francisco and gets involved in the porn industry. The script comes courtesy of adult film vet Lorelei Lee.

Alibi Midnight Movie Madness is in the mood for some kung fu craziness this weekend. So we dug up the long-lost 1986 martial arts musical Miami Connection for your viewing bewilderment. It’s got ninjas, it’s got synth rock. I mean, just take a gander at that trailer up there. Gawker.com just said, “This is not just a great bad movie—it’s a phenomenal one.” We’ll be screening it at Guild Cinema at 10:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Come on out and prepare to be amazed.

Halloween is fast approaching, and we’re celebrating the occasion with a screening of the extremely scary anthology film V/H/S this weekend at Guild Cinema. The film is the work of several of today’s hottest, up-and-coming indie horror directors—including Ti West (The House of the Devil) and David Bruckner (The Signal). Check out the trailer above (if you dare). The film starts at 10:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 26, and Saturday, Oct. 27. Tickets are $8 adults, $6 students/seniors.

Alibi Midnight Movie Madness returns to Guild Cinema in Nob Hill for another weekend of crazed cult cinema. On Friday and Saturday, we’ll be presenting [REC] 3: Genesis—the third film in the wildly popular Spanish zombie apocalypse series. This time around in the loosely connected storyline, our videocamera-wielding heroes are a soon-to-be husband-and-wife team. When the demon-driven zombie plague hits their wedding party, it’s up to the blushing bride to pick up a chainsaw and take back her special day. Expect more humor, but no less gore for this one. Showtimes start at 10 p.m. and Midnight. Admission is $8 general, $6 students and seniors.

What are you doing on this fine Sunday afternoon? In the mood for some heavy drinking? Not as a participant, mind you, but as an amused observer? Head on over to The Box Performance Space for the world premiere screening of the feature-length comedy Drunk. The movie, directed by Phillip Hughes and written by Scott Bryan, features a whole host of Albuquerque actors including Daniel T. Cornish, Rebekah Wiggins, Jenn Daugherty, Jason Witter and Ryan Jason Cook. It was lensed in and around our fair city in 2011 and will be hitting film festivals at the end of the summer. The screening is free, but it’s also a fundraiser—so, if you wanna help out by sponsoring the film at an upcoming festival, there will be a donation pot to help get Drunk up and out on the road. Cast and crew will be around for the screenings at 3 and 5 p.m. Seating is limited, so you might want to shoot an RSVP over to the film’s Facebook page.

Albuquerque Film Office’s monthly Indie Q meeting returns to the KiMo Theater Downtown on Wednesday, May 23. Tonight will be a jam-packed night of local film shorts. Liz Langston from the Film Office will introduce the evening. That will be followed by 11 shorts. Did you know there’s a sequel to Paul Verhoeven’s 1995 trash classic / object of cult worship Showgirls? Sort of. Rena Reffel, who plays the ditzy stripper Penny in that film, got tired of waiting for somebody to make a sequel—so she went out and wrote, directed, edited, produced and starred in Showgirls 2: Penny’s From Heaven. It’s exactly as good as you think it is. Don’t believe me? Check out the trailer. We’ll be screening it at Alibi Midnight Movie Madness this Friday and Saturday at 10:30 p.m. at Guild Cinema. Alibi is asking its readers to help the City of Albuquerque bring back the popular Civic Cinema film series in grand fashion. There will be three free public movie screenings this summer on Downtown's Civic Plaza. The city is asking you to pitch in and vote for your favorite films. The number one choice will be shown at the first public screening on June 1. After that, the winning film is removed, and voting starts all over again. Didn't get to see the movie you wanted? Vote some more. Encourage your friends to chime in as well.

The Poets and Writers film series, cosponsored by the Friends For The Public Library, kicks off today at Guild Cinema in Nob Hill. Among the word-centric films are An Angel At My Table (Jane Campion’s biopic about distinguished author Janet Frame), Barton Fink (the Coen brother’s existentially spoofy look at screenwriting in the Golden Age of Hollywood) and Slam Planet: War of Words (a documentary look at the national slam poetry championships). Each film will be introduced by a local author and/or poet. Alibi is getting into the spirit of the festival by sponsoring the Midnight Movie Madness screening of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. This spiritedly trippy adaptation of gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson’s crackpot autobiography (directed by Monty Python’s Terry Gilliam) stars Johnny Depp, Benicio Del Toro, Harry Dean Stanton, Cameron Diaz, Ellen Barkin, Christina Ricci, Gary Busey, Lyle Lovett and more. Fear and Loathing will play Friday and Saturday night at 9:30 p.m. only. Local poet Olivia Gatwood will introduce Friday’s show. City Slam Champion Hakim Bellamy will kick it off on Saturday.
