Toyota issues a recall on nearly 2.3 million vehicles
By Adam Fox [ Wed Jan 27 2010 10:31 AM ]
Toyota, the world’s second-largest automaker under Volkswagen-Porsche, has issued a recall of nearly 2.3 million of its best selling cars and trucks pertaining to a mixture of sticking accelerators and problematic floor mats.
It all started in September of 2009, when a family driving a Lexus ES 350 made a chilling 911 call reporting a stuck accelerator before crashing at an intersection at speeds close to 100 mph. The family was killed. Listen to the call here.
Toyota then proceeded to investigate the problem, and in response issued a recall of nearly 3.8 million vehicles suspected of having faulty floor mats that could become stuck under the accelerator. An additional 2.3 million vehicles have been recalled pertaining to sticking gas pedals.
As per a phone conversation with local dealer American Toyota, the latest recall was leaked to the press prematurely and was to be officially announced the first week of February. Owners of the models listed below will be notified by mail on measures to take to deal with the recall:
• 2009-2010 RAV4,
• 2009-2010 Corolla,
• 2009-2010 Matrix,
• 2005-2010 Avalon,
• 2007-2010 Camry,
• 2010 Highlander,
• 2007-2010 Tundra,
• 2008-2010 Sequoia
