The Daily Word in ferret bans, molasses spills and coal slides

Admission to the State Fair is free for everyone today! Go eat something fried!

Two days after the Navy Yard shootings, the usual idiots are saying the usual idiotic things. Things like "False flag," "crisis actors," "Obama," and "conspiracy."

A muddy coal slide, or perhaps a coal-y mud slide, slopped its way through Madrid, NM on Sunday night.

But it's water that's resumed flowing for residents of Jal, NM.

A Tennessee judge has ruled that it's okay to name your baby "Messiah." Just in case you want your kid to have that particular reason to hate you for the rest of their life.

A pipeline pumping molasses from Hawaii to California, which is totally a real thing, ruptured last week, spilling 233,000 gallons of the delicious-but-fish-killing substance into the ocean.

And, as of yesterday, you may no longer bring ferrets into Arizona restaurants. Miniature horses are still cool, though.

Culture Shock

Another Earth

At first glance, painter Melissa Morgan's Enter Anthropocene embraces an ethereal, flower-childlike bond between humans and nature. But that's where Cassidy Watt—owner of Metallo Gallery (2863 Hwy. 14, Madrid)—says Morgan shows her sleight of hand for subtle metaphor. "There is a celebration in the paintings because they're very beautiful and pretty," says Watt, "but I think there's also a warning there."

Time-Traveling Transvestite

Joe West is Xoë Fitzgerald in a New Mexican sci-fi rock opera

This is a story about love, so we know from the outset to expect tragedy. But, as the cross-dressing, folk-singing antihero of Xoë Fitzgerald: Time-Traveling Transvestite teaches us, that’s no reason to give up on a good cause.

History Lesson

DayBird - March 11th

537 - Goths lay siege to Rome. Quickly gave up, wrote a poem instead:

It is Boredom! — an eye brimming with an involuntary tear,
he dreams of the gallows while smoking his water-pipe.
You know him, reader, this fragile monster,
—hypocrite reader,—my twin,—my brother!

1302 - Romeo and Juliet's wedding day, according to Shakespeare. I can neither confirm nor deny.

1810 - Emperor Napoleon married by proxy to Archduchess Marie Louise.

1818Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus is published. It has a creature in it.

1847Johnny Appleseed, American pioneer agronomist (b. 1774)

1936 - Antonin Scalia, American Supreme Court Justice. Reagan appointed. I don’t find him particularly funny.

1955 – Sir Alexander Fleming, Scottish scientist, Nobel laureate (b. 1881)

1992 Lawrence Welk (b.1903) American bandleader and show peep.

1997 - Ashes of Star Trek creator, Gene Roddenberry are launched into space.

2004 - Ten bombs hidden in backpacks exploded in quick succession across the commuter rail network in Madrid, Spain, killing 191 people and wounding about 1,800. Muslim militants claim responsibility.

2006 - Former Serb leader Slobodan Milosevic was found dead of a heart attack in his cell during his war crimes trial in The Hague. Ha Ha.
