Jazz Rags

Late last month, the Off Broadway vintage clothing store and costume shop in Nob Hill paid tribute to an appearance by actress Tippi Hedren at the KiMo Theatre. They did so by turning the store’s display window into a fashion show inspired by Hedren’s iconic appearances in classic Alfred Hitchcock movies. Keeping on the cinematic tip, Off Broadway has now transformed their Central Ave. storefront into a salute to director Baz Luhrmann’s version of The Great Gatsby (hitting theaters this Friday, May 10). The display features authentic 1920s fashions inspired by the jazzy film. Check it out throughout May at 3110 Central SE.

Marky Mark Loves New Mexico

Huh. Apparently, Mark Wahlberg will spend September shooting not one, but two movies in our fair state. Aside from the based-on-a-comic-book cop drama 2 Guns (with Denzel Washington), Wahlberg will also star in the based-on-a-true-story war drama Lone Survivor.

I-Eee-Aye Will Always Love You

Just in time for the film’s 20th anniversary and ... something else I can’t seem to recall, Fathom Events and Warner Bros. are presenting a special, one-night-only screening of The Bodyguard. On Wednesday, March 28, at 7:30 p.m., more than 400 theaters nationwide will screen the 1992 romantic drama starring Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston. (... Oh, right.) Cinema Ecuador

Instituto Cervantes continues its Latin American film series this week at the National Hispanic Cultural Center. On Thursday, Feb. 2, the Bank of America Theatre at the NHCC (1701 Fourth Street SW) will screen the 2005 Ecuadorian film Anytime Soon (Esas No Son Penas). It’s the story of five women from Quito, buddies as teens, who reunite to visit an ailing friend after 15 years. Think The Big Chill, but with fewer hippies and more of an accent. The film screening is free and will be presented with English subtitles. Show gets underway at 7 p.m. Get there early to guarantee a seat.

Bullet Needs Background

There will be a major casting call this Sunday, Dec. 11, for the “post Civil War Western” Silver Bullet (which I think we can all agree is the worst fake working title they could possibly have come up with for Disney’s remake of The Lone Ranger). The casting call will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Far Horizon Studio (300 Washington SE, suite 304). Casting director Elizabeth Gabel (Cowboys & Aliens, Terminator Salvation, No Country For Old Men, Paul) will conduct the day-long search. Producers are looking for “Native Americans, Asians, Anglos and Hispanics of all ages, as well as expert horse riders to appear in non-speaking roles.” The production is also on the hunt for “men with facial hair and for trapeze and circus artists.” (I’m thinking if you’re a hairy trapeze artist, you’re in like Flynn.) These are all paid positions. The film, which stars Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer, will begin shooting in the Albuquerque / Santa Fe area in February.

Family Feud

Are you a terrible parent? Would you like to broadcast that fact to the rest of the world? Well, you’re in luck. ABC’s reality show “SuperNanny” is casting for Season 5 right here in New Mexico. You can e-mail local casting director Aaron Giombolini of Kathryn Brink Casting at Casting505@gmail.com with contact info, family size and troubling (yet entertaining) parenting issues. Or you can brave the open casting call on Saturday, Dec. 5, at the Albuquerque International Balloon Museum from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Try not to feed your kids before you go. They’ll be extra cranky that way. Oh, and be sure to tell them Richard Heene sent you.
