By Geoffrey Anjou [ Wed Apr 7 2010 11:41 AM ]
1506 – Saint Francis Xavier, Spanish co-founder of the Society of Jesus is born. He converted everyone, whether they liked it or not. My family Parish was St. Francis Xavier here in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Our pastor was one convicted of attempted criminal solicitation of children, Robert Malloy . Oh hai!
1521 – Ferdinand Magellan arrives at Cebu.
1614 – El Greco, Greek-born artist dies in Toledo, Spain. In 1577, he moved to Toledo, where he lived and worked until his death. It was there he received several major commissions and produced his best known paintings. The city was famed for religious tolerance. It was declared a World Heritage Site in 1986 for its extensive cultural and monumental heritage regarding the coexistence of Christian, Jewish and Moorish cultures. Jews were expelled from Spain in 1492 (to become Sephardic Jews) and Muslims in 1502. Today the city contains the religious monuments: the Synagogue of Santa María la Blanca, the Synagogue of El Transito, and the Mosque of Cristo de la Luz dating from before the expulsion. Sadly, religious tolerance never made a comeback, my picture of Toledo, above.
1770 – William Wordsworth, English poet is born.

1915 – Billie Holiday, American singer is born this day. Had a hard knock life.
1939 – Francis Ford Coppola, Italian-American film director, producer and screenwriter.
1948 -The World Health Organization founded. It was lost.
1994 – Massacres of Tutsis begin in Kigali, Rwanda.
Over the course of approximately 100 days, or more, from the assassination of Juvénal Habyarimana on April 6 through mid-July, at least 800,000 people were killed, according to the estimate of Human Rights Watch. Other estimates of the death toll have ranged between 500,000 and 1,000,000, or as much as 20% of the total population of the country.
