Dinner and a show
By Captain America [ Thu Mar 28 2013 1:02 PM ]
The classic date of yore? A cozy supper place featuring a floor show. This Friday Rebekkah Dreskin invites you to a similarly catered affair. Dine on platters from Panda Express (served at 6 pm) followed promptly by her quirky (“Love Is A Stolen Bowling Ball”) and playful (“Dim Sum In Albuquerque”) songs. Picture Jill Sobule moving between keyboards and a programmed synth beats while throwing down rhymes about hooking up with pretty boys and girls or aspiring to be like Liz Phair and Chrissie Hynde (“Girls With Guitarz”). Her latest, sunny self-release, Blame It On Rebekkah, sits in stark contrast to earlier CDs of piano-based love and loss in a low-key Tori Amos vein. But just because Dreskin’s a bit more lighthearted this time around doesn’t mean she’s not putting all of her singular self into the work. Ten bucks gets you dinner and a show while a fiver is good for admission only. Low Spirits • Rebekkah Dreskin CD release • Fri Mar 29 • 6 pm • $5-$10 • 21+ • lowspiritslive.com

Germinate local genius with ABQ Sprout
By Marisa Demarco [ Thu Jan 26 2012 9:00 AM ]
Have you heard about this grassroots effort to improve the city?
The model works like this:
• Folks pay to get into a dinner cooked by a local chef.
• During the dinner, people make pitches on how to make Albuquerque a better place.
• The diners vote, and the money they paid to attend the event becomes an instant micro-grant for the winner.
In Albuquerque it’s called ABQ Sprout, though it’s based on a model that goes by various names in other cities. The first-ever dinner is Saturday, Jan. 28, at the South Valley Multipurpose Center (2008 Larrazolo SW). Admission is $15 to $30 on a sliding scale.
A Spit Shine on the City

Two projects promise to better Burque: ABQ Sprout, a micro-grant dinner that funds good ideas and CNM’s free green-collar jobs training.

Hey, guess what? Relish’s Uptown store is now open for dinner. Think about how much you love Relish’s sandwiches—how its chefs knead out creamy globes of mozzarella fresh each day, how they take time to hand-crank black pepper onto each sliced-to-order tomato. Now imagine the care and attention they lavish on every step of assembling your beloved, award-winning sandwich and what kind of magic they could work on a meal like dinner. Now go get the car keys, because your fantasy is a short trip away from becoming a reality. (LM)
