The present's so bright, you ought to wear (shutter) shades

If y'all read my intro column, Dancing About Pueblo Revival Style Architecture, you already know I dig making podcasts of Nuevo Mexicano music for my blog, Things in Light. There's some terrific work being created by local musicians and I'm psyched to share it with Alibi readers. The new TiL podcast, Shutter Mix, includes tracks from the 2011 solo women's Gatas y Vatas fest compilation and tunes by Shiprock post-punk duo Discotays and Fort Wingate-based composer Ryan Dennison, among others. Stream it below or see the original blog post for a full track list.

Art party tonight at Amped

Pop artist Josh Jones has been running the Injunuity art show as part of his nomadic Black Market Goods series for four years. Coinciding with Gathering of Nations, tonight’s event is only $3 and includes several bands and DJs, free food, live bodypainting and the work of about a dozen Native and non-Native artists. It takes place at Amped Performance Center (415 Central NW) at 8 p.m. and should go into the wee hours.

The Pow! in Powwow

Black Market Goods resurfaces for Gathering of Nations with eclectic bash

The flyer for Josh Jones' Injunuity art show depicts a head-dressed Native American cartoon character gleefully gassing an undersized hotrod beneath the tagline "Start your Injuns!" A throwback to the comically bizarre work of Ed Roth and R. Crumb, the illustration is indicative of the unhinged spirit of the event Jones has been assembling for four years during Gathering of Nations.

Electronic Blessings

Fest spotlights new wave of Native musicians

Brad Charles wants you to know there's more to rez music than metal. Charles and his partner, Hansen Ashley, make up the Navajo Nation-based post-punk duo Discotays. Dissatisfied with performance opportunities on the reservation for indie and electronic music, Charles organized a showcase to coincide with the 100th annual Northern Navajo Nation Fair.

Flyer on the Wall

It’s Raining Circles

The artist behind this fanciful flyer seems to reference ’70s illustration and a certain children’s show that was filled with an ensemble cast of Muppets and really strange animated shorts. Blocky text contrasts with pale yellow watercolor, and the viewer learns that Gay Beast, XRY, The Gatherers and Discotays will play at Wunderkind (1016 Coal SW) at 8 p.m. on Sunday, July 11, amidst a shower of multicolored circles. See the glam / psychedelic / new wave magic, and possibly a few unnamed acts, for only $5. (Jessica Cassyle Carr)
