Special Olympics New Mexico

Area 5 Unified Volleyball Competition

In 1968 the first Special Olympics Games were organized in Chicago by Anna McGlone Burke. She approached Eunice Kennedy Shriver and gained Shriver's philanthropic support.

Special Olympics Timeline.

Today this writer had the pleasure of attending the Area Five Unified Volleyball Competition held at Johnson Gym on the UNM campus. In a nutshell, New Mexico is divided into Six Areas. Bernalillo, Sandoval, Torrance, Valencia and Socorro are all in Area Five. Unified means there are disabled and non-disabled players on the teams together.

The atmosphere in the arena was laid back and jocular, with athletes in particular taking pleasure in their game. There was yelling. There were victory dances before matches even started. Most importantly though, the volleyball matches were filled with knuckle-biting climaxes that rivaled the third period in a'79 vintage Rangers vs. Islanders hockey game.

Check out the official Special Olympics New Mexico website and schedule here. Events are free, and everyone is welcome. Check out the Rio Rancho Area Five fundraiser t.v. spot if you haven't seen it yet.

Noda’s Japanese Cuisine—I’m mourning the loss of one of the best Japanese restaurants in the state. Some friends and I were planning a night out and wanted to make reservations for Noda’s omakase dinner—a sumptuous, prix fixe feast prepared in a manner you’d expect from a four-star establishment. Noda’s inventive dishes included top-quality ingredients in distinctive presentations. I once had a dessert consisting of a sweet rice cake shaped like a fig, stuffed with sweet bean paste and partially wrapped with a fragrant, salty/sweet shiso leaf. Alas, Noda’s closed the doors at its Trinity Plaza location in Rio Rancho this winter.

It’s Time to Eat the Doughnuts

Nothing beats the sugary fragrance of tender, fried dough. The doughnut is a pastry made to be eaten fresh—best with morning coffee or tea. I decided to seek out Albuquerque shops dedicated to the glazed, sprinkled, filled and frosted treats, and found only four independent shops competing with four Dunkin' Donuts and two Krispy Kreme locations.
