Still Bonin’ in the Boneyard
Formed in ’79 while they were in High School, Fishbone were signed by a record label the same year they graduated. For over three decades, they have shared their unique punk/funk/ska hybrid with fans everywhere, breaking down racial barriers and earning street cred with punk rockers and rappers alike.
The newest documentary, Everyday Sunshine: the Story of Fishbone is currently available on Netflix Instant. Narrated by Laurence Fishburne, it takes you on a raw journey through the emotional ups and downs of Fishbone’s founding members. Revered by music heavyweights such as Flea and Mike Watt in the film, the same sentiment is often echoed: As good as their recordings are, they will never compare to the electric frenzy of a live Fishbone show. If you’ve never seen one, you’re in luck. Fishbone will be blowing the roof off Sister Monday night. Thirteen bones will get you in the door (ten in advance through Hold My Ticket).
Let the good times roll
This week's Music to Your Ears delivers the 411 on the Mod-i-Gras Ball, a Fishbone concert and a strange recital featuring Jagjaguwar-signed act The Lord Dog Bird and witchy psych-folk chanteuse Caethua. Check out representative A/V below. Blackbird Buvette • The Mod-i-Gras Ball • DJs Bea, Cassyle and Mello • Sat Feb 2 • 10 pm • FREE • 21+ • blackbirdbuvette.com
Update: According to Alibi Music Editor Emeritus Jessica Cassyle Carr, aka DJ Cassyle, there was a scheduling mix-up and the Mod-i-Gras Ball ain't gonna happen. But you can still listen to songs like this one, while slow-dancing with a loved one or broom.

TEN, Local Spin and American Deacon
There’s always so much amazing live music happening in Burque and Santa Fe. It’s impossible to cover it all, but I will do my utmost to keep y’all apprised of the best shows happening each week. In this week’s Music to Your Ears, I honed in on three shows that sound particularly boss. Eric McFadden’s new trio, TEN, debuts at Sister on Friday. On Saturday, the Local Spin listening party at Blackbird Buvette features lots of Gatas y Vatas fest tracks and performances by Lauren Anderson, Pancakes! and The Vomettes (The 5 Star Motelles). If you feel like a road trip to the City Different, consider going on Tuesday, because Dan Deacon performs at Molly’s Kitchen and Lounge.

Documentarian Chris Metzler on Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone
After completing his award-winning 2004 documentary Plagues and Pleasure on the Salton Sea, San Francisco-based director Chris Metzler went out on tour, roadshowing the film, meeting audiences and doing Q & As. He passed through Albuquerque, stopping briefly at the Guild Cinema. He’ll be back again this weekend with his new film, Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone. The film chronicles the tumultuous, multidecade life of funk/punk/ska pioneer Fishbone—starting at the roots of L.A.’s punk rock scene, traveling through the ups and downs of success, and heading straight into the weirder realms of cult brainwashing, attempted kidnapping and theremin worship. The Alibi took the opportunity to chat with Metzler about the madcap, music-based documentary before his arrival in New Mexico.
