Alibi Hero: Our Weekly Instagram Photo Contest
By Amelia Olson [ Fri Apr 10 2015 3:50 PM ]
Here at the Alibi we love a lot of things. We are moved by the whimsies and strikingly cold realities of being human and living on Earth. Without heroes, who would we be? Who would guide us through the dark times? Inspire us to be better?
Ham, the first chimpanzee in space was launched into the bursting ether on January 31st, 1961. Named after the lab that prepped his precious body for space exploration, Holloman Aerospace Medical Center, Ham continues to inspire all of us at the Alibi and is our elected hero.
Because we can't win our own contest, we asked you to submit pictures of your hero. This week's winner is Instagram user stormyjill, who captioned her picture with the following:
"Abby, Rape Crisis Center of Central New Mexico's Volunteer Coordinator and my best friend. I'm super proud of you and not a lot of people would be able to do what you do for a living. I'm happy to embarrass you and name you as my #alibihero."
Not only are we thankful for the work that people like Abby do on a daily basis, we are also sorta hoping you'll take your BFF out to lunch with the $10 in Alibi Bucks you won. But don't worry, we have some treats for you too!
Email firstname.lastname@example.org to redeem your prizes!
For more information about the Rape Crisis Center of Central New Mexico visit their website or call their hotline at 505-266-7711.

Workin' it: Our weekly Instagram photo contest winner
By Amelia Olson [ Fri Apr 3 2015 2:03 PM ]
It's Friday! Which doesn't mean much to those of you who work through the weekend, but for the rest of us it's time to kick up our feet and enjoy the weekend. You sent us pictures of your work space this week!
And while your work spaces were cool, scary and disorganized, we thought this week's prize ought to go to Instagram user buttsweatandtears for their beer, condoms and hot sauce work desk. Way to be responsible with your culinary and romantic decisions!
Email Amelia@alibi.com with subject line PHOTO CONTEST and redeem your siiiiiiiiiiick prizes and $10 in Alibi Bucks!
Stay tuned for next week's contest and be sure to follow us @weeklyalibi.

Sign of the times: Our weekly Instagram photo contest winner
By Amelia Olson [ Fri Mar 27 2015 2:26 PM ]
Each week we reward one passionate Alibi reader-slash-Instagrammer with $10 in Alibi Bucks. Alibi Bucks can help you get anything from tickets to Naked Food Fair to a sandwich at Cafe Lush and each week we have new deals to spend your bucks on.
This week we asked you to tag us in pictures of your favorite Albuquerque signs and you posted some pretty killer retro signs.
Our second runner up, gq.ninja posted this awesome old school KOB sign. The vintage simplicity is really a sign of the times and we love the bare tree branches in the distance. Thanks for posting!
This week's winner is lettersfromburque's gorgeous picture of the Helen's Bakery sign. We love the backdrop of our dreamy Albuquerque skies and the vibrant turquoise cross against the weathered white wooden sign. Thank you for posting! To collect your prize and Alibi Bucks email Amelia@alibi.com.
Stay tuned for next week's guidelines and if you don't already, follow us on Instagram!

Quintessential Albuquerque: Our weekly Instagram photo contest winner
By Samantha Anne Carrillo [ Sat Mar 14 2015 3:18 PM ]
Instagram is no longer the sovereign province of "the hipster." Your mom and grandma are probably there too, posting Rise-filtered snaps of their latest programming manual or regional cookbook. We dig Instagram because an inclusive ethos motivates our social media efforts. Put simply, we love seeing the world through your eyes.
So every week we reward one passionate Alibi reader-
Last week's theme was Quintessential Albuquerque (#alibiburque / @weeklalibi), and the winner is Instagram user @andreamichellelove29. Her ristra photo captures the earthy effulgence of two of New Mexico's core elements, red chile and sunshine. Please email email@example.com for deets on retrieving your prize package of $10 Alibi Bucks and an extra something or two (CDs, books and/or promotional schwag).

Photo Contest ends. In the meantime ...
The window to submit photos for the eighth annual Alibi Photo Contest closes on Thursday, March 17, at 5 p.m. Thank you to everyone who sent in their pics—be sure to check out the March 31 issue of the Alibi to see who won. In the meantime, photo-buffs can hear a talk on Edwin Land by MIT’s Dr. Victor McElheny at the Albuquerque Museum (2000 Mountain NW) on Sunday, March 20, at 1 p.m. Land was a businessman, war contractor, follower of the arts and an inventor. He worked on early smart bombs and one of his inventions led to swirly lights inside jukeboxes. He also invented the Polaroid camera. They make everything look like it’s 1974. It is important to note that while Land invented the Polaroid, he wasn’t the one who instructed you to shake it like one. That was Outkast. The talk is in conjunction with the ongoing exhibit A Passionate Light: Polaroids by H. Joe Waldrum. For more information, go to cabq.gov/museum.

Eighth Annual Alibi Photo Contest
By John Bear [ Thu Feb 24 2011 3:59 PM ]
There is still time to impress us with your photo skills and win cool stuff. Enter the eighth annual Alibi Photo Contest.
It’s real easy. These are the rules.
1) Upload no more than three photos to our Alibi Photo Contest 2011 group on Flickr.com. Label them with their appropriate tag.
Most of this year’s categories are the same as last year’s:
• ¡Que Albuquerque!—
• Things Are Not What They Seem—For manipulated or Photoshopped images (tag: thingsarenotwhattheyseem)
• People Are People—Human-focused photos (tag: peoplearepeople)
• Land Ho—Landscapes of the natural world, flowers, a plant, etc. (tag: landho)
• This Modern Life—Architecture, street scenes, the weird and wonderful world of the man-made (tag: thismodernlife)
I’m adding two more themes, however.
• Birds—They love being photographed. The more obscure and endangered, the better. A roadrunner smashing a lizard into a rock is likewise also cool. (tag birds)
• From the Streets—Albuquerque, nay, New Mexico, is a crazy place. Photos of wrecks, fires and emergency situations are always fun to get. Caveat: Don’t interfere with the police or firefighters. Get the photos like a ghost. (tag: streets)
2) On Flickr, add “alibidotcom” as a contact and send us a FlickrMail with the following information:
Subject—Alibi Photo Contest 2011
Body—Your full name, titles of all photos you’ve submitted and contact info (e-mail and phone)
3) Photo resolution should be at approximately 360 DPI at a reproduction size of 5 by 7 inches (or 1,800 by 2,520 in pixels). If your photo is chosen for the cover, we’ll contact you for a higher resolution image. (In general, if you’re chosen as a winner and your Flickr image is not at the proper resolution, we’ll contact you for a higher resolution copy.)
In the interest of fairness, anyone who still shoots old school (with actual film) can send their pics to 413 Central NW, Albuquerque, N.M., 87102. Keep them 8 by 10 inches or smaller.
Entries must be received by Thursday, March 17, at 5 p.m. Winners will be announced in the March 31 issue. As always, Buena suerte.
