Now Hear This, Vol. V

You are about to enter another dimension. A dimension of A/V. This is the middle ground between mediocre and too-good-to-be-true, between something called "reggae" and the sound angels emit. You are traveling deep into the realm of rad tuneage. Next stop, Now Hear This!

High desert magick

When it comes to local wizard-themed bands, too much is never enough. Swervegaze wizard REIGHNBEAU has been casting beatific spellsand stealing my vantablack heartsince prime mover Bryce Hample began transmitting incantations into the æther. During the Alibi's latest totally-not-weekly podcast, guests Marya Errin Jones (ABQ Zine Fest founder, The Tannex co-founder) and Mike Smith (author, zinester and Alibi contributing writer) had high praise for REIGHNBEAU's "Milk of Amnesia" video premiere at Guild Cinema. If you missed that rad event, fear not. Screen the viddy below. Commune with REIGHNBEAU, BK Beats, The 1960 Sci-Fi Era and Nathan New in the so-called flesh at a Nothng Forevr showcase at Burt's Tiki Lounge (313 Gold SW) on Saturday, Aug. 23 at 9pm. It's a 21-plus recital, and there's no cover.

Funky, drank-y and draggy tunes for Thursday's child

Music can encapsulate a feeling. I'm not exactly sure what feeling this mix captures, but it probably involves illicit substances, Dixie cups, seapunk chic and halfhearted twerking. Musicians from Los Angeles, Portland, New Orleans, Chicago, New Orleans, San Jose, Calif. and France conjure up the sound I was looking for last night. The Quintron song is definitely NSFW. As for the rest, you'd best judge for yourself. Stream the mix and peep the track list below.

Soundtracking a route of wolves

As I decided what podcast to share with y’all today, I’m surrounded by glorious canines. Not wolves, mind you. But one of the coolest things about working at the Alibi is the dog-friendly office. That’s how I ended up selecting my Walking the Wolf mix for today’s blog. It’s an exciting story, I know. But I promise the podcast itself is far more thrilling than my description of the selection process. Stream the mixfeaturing tracks by The Kill Spectors, Tenderizor, Venus Bogardus, The Grave of Nobody’s Darling, Great White Buffalo, Sabertooth Cavity, Bigawatt and The Kleptonesbelow or visit the original blog post for the full track list.

Music

Songs in the key of Nuevo Mexicano

Most of the podcasts I create for my blog exclusively showcase New Mexican artists and recordings. Songs in the Key of Nuevo Mexicano strays from that formula, with only one 505-based musician, Joe West, and one former Santa Fean act, Beirut. But all eight tracks are themed on the land of enchantment. The performers range from minimal wave icons Oppenheimer Analysis and Jeff & Jane Hudson to cowboy king Roy Rogers to Austinite alt.country silver fox Dale Watson. Listen to the podcast below or visit the original blog post for the full track list.

The present's so bright, you ought to wear (shutter) shades

If y'all read my intro column, Dancing About Pueblo Revival Style Architecture, you already know I dig making podcasts of Nuevo Mexicano music for my blog, Things in Light. There's some terrific work being created by local musicians and I'm psyched to share it with Alibi readers. The new TiL podcast, Shutter Mix, includes tracks from the 2011 solo women's Gatas y Vatas fest compilation and tunes by Shiprock post-punk duo Discotays and Fort Wingate-based composer Ryan Dennison, among others. Stream it below or see the original blog post for a full track list.

American Posers: The Yoga Interviews

The Alibi’s Patricia Sauthoff speaks with authors Stephanie Syman and Mark Singelton about the cultural history of yoga in America

Yoga-junkies, wrap your mind around asanas and more with the Alibi’s interviews with authors Stefanie Syman and Mark Singleton. We spoke with Syman over the phone during the first leg of her book tour and sat down with Singleton at Santa Fe’s Body Café (which explains the clinking in the background). Both interviews have been edited slightly for time and to take out the bits where we wandered off topic. Now, pardon us, all this yoga research reminds us we’ve got a pose to perfect…
