Since there's no Best Band in Rio Rancho category in this year's Best of Burque poll, it's up to bands in The R to duke it out themselves for scene supremacy. (I'm starting a grassroots campaign to re-brand Rio Rancho "The R." It's just as tacky and insipid as paying a PR firm to christen Albuquerque "The Q," and if people in The Q have to suffer, everyone else should, too. While we're at it, join me in reducing New Mexico to one "colorful" and buzz-generating letter, "The X." Maybe we can trick Jessica Alba into coming back to the most mysterious state in The USA.)

Auditions for The R's city-sponsored Battle of the Bands will be held this Friday, Feb. 22, from 7-10 p.m. at the Sabana Grande Recreation Center. If you've got a demo, make sure to get it into Facility Coordinator Lori Leeds' hands before then. Call her at 891-7255 for more details. According to The R's website (hopelessly un-catchy ci.rio-rancho.nm.us), the center has a "huge auditorium with a stage," which buffs some gloss onto the whole affair. You can find the center at 4110 Sabana Grande, one streetlight north of 528 and Southern. And it's next to the The R's MVD.
