Music to Your Ears
Scores of Scores
The New Mexico film industry's proverbial belt gets another notch punched in it this week, but it's not what you'll see that's making the state proud—it's what you'll hear. Albuquerque musician Tom Monahan composed the score for Fat Head, a nationally released docu-comedy starring, written and directed by Tom Naughton. The film is a direct challenge to Morgan Spurlock's 2004 Super Size Me (and, indirectly, an homage to Subway's "Jared" ad campaign). It follows Naughton as he eats nothing but fast food for 28 days and loses weight.
Monahan says he composed the score on his Mac's GarageBand software right here in Albuquerque, then sent the files to Hollywood where they were professionally recorded. Fat Head makes its Albuquerque debut at Guild Cinema on Friday, April 17, with two shows at 7 and 9 p.m. Monahan will be at the screenings, so come prepared with your questions about breaking into the film scoring biz. For more on the movie, visit fathead-movie.com.
And speaking of soundtracks, April's Best of Burque second-place winners for Best Avant-Garde act Carlosaur and Eva Ave. just completed a score of their own. The film is "Spider Woman Salt Cake," a four-and-a-half-minute stop-animation piece made by Michelle Basta in New Orleans. Carlosaur, Eva Ave. and Roman Garcia composed the "Western-gypsy-falling-building music" that accompanies Basta's visuals. (The central figure reminds me of Björk's heartbroken robots in the "All Is Full of Love" music video.)
Be a Little Kiss Records Intern
"Little Kiss Records is a small but mighty local record label," LKR founder James S. de Champlon opens in an e-mail to the Alibi. He says the label—which houses a handful of bands like Nels Andrews & The El Paso Eyepatch, Jasper Brown, Boyd Reno Is John Center, Foma and the Darlington Horns—is starting to focus on expanding its marketing, and that's going to require the help of some interns.
Little Kiss needs assistance in placing "national and international calls to radio stations, checking on and encouraging airplay for current releases." There may also be a responsibility-heavy position open for intern marketing coordinator, one that "could be used as some sort of course credit for a graduate student," he suggests. The gigs are nonpaying (but, it should be noted, rich in potential to make you smarter and cooler).
