Blue Bar

Low Spirits haunts the building that once housed Bear Assets

The first dance of the night

On Friday night the bar was comfortably full, populated by a crowd teeming with baby boomers and twentysomethings alike. Despite the place’s given name, everyone seemed to be feeling festive, there to take in a little local blues, have a drink and maybe a dance.

Low Spirits, located at 2823 Second Street NW, is a stone’s throw from Downtown. After dealing with months of bureaucratic rigamarole and annoyance, Joe Anderson, owner of the Sunshine Theater and Launchpad, was able to officially open the North Valley’s new live music venue on Dec. 2.

Intended as a mellower alternative to Downtown’s frequently loud live shows, Low Spirits’ 2010 schedule boasts a host of blues, country, jazz, rock and other events that will likely tickle your fancy and spare your hearing. If you’ve yet to drop by, glimpse this pictorial introduction to the shiny, newborn bar.

I want to start off by asking you, Jessica, to not take this to heart because I mean no offense to you personally. BUT, I am really disappointed in this article. The pictures are terrible and the story is mediocre. This bar is Really awesome and I think it deserves more credit than you've given here. The work done in there since it was "Bear Assets" is incredible. You suggest to view the pictorial so we might get a glimpse of the "shiny new bar" but, you haven't provided a very nice glimpse. I've seen better shots taken by drunk people with cell phones. Honestly, if it were me who had put any time, effort or money into Low Spirits I'd be offended. I've visited this bar a few times now and it has a great energy, people are friendly, and it's such a great alternative to what has become the downtown scene. I thank the goodness that is for providing something different and I feel we should support it as much as possible so we can continue to enjoy the bands (holy shit, this place actually has great sound too) and atmosphere that's offered. I really hope people look past this article, come out and experience it for themselves cause I'd really like to keep it going.

You must not read the paper. If you paid attention you might notice we write about events happening at Low Spirits (and if not Low Spirits, one of Joe Anderson's other establishments) every week.

This article was done for an x-mas-time issue ... when almost NOTHING is going on in Albuquerque—the perfect opportunity to photo profile a new space. Sure, these photos aren't great—I'm no pro, but I was the only one available. And what story? It's just photos. Sorry you saw this as a show of antagonism.

And why the quotes with Bear Assets? That's what it was called. Look it up. We did.

waste of space, and complete crap. no offense.

  • Thanks Geoffrey  [ Tue Feb 9 2010 12:32 PM ]

    Very nice of you.

  • again, i meant no offense to you personally.  [ Tue Feb 9 2010 8:35 PM ]

So there's no need to be on the offense. I'm not trying to attack you. Although, it's hard not to want to after you're lame attempt at trying to attack me. I know the bar was previously Bear Assets. I saw the shit hole it used to be that's part of the reason I feel it would've been nice to give some credit to Low Spirits and take some decent pictures accompanied by a decent article. I made a mistake putting quotes there. Sorry. (admitting that one has fucked up doesn't need to be a big deal) I've made no claims at being a writer by the way. I do read the paper. Having articles about Joes other establishments has nothing to do with, as "cheesedip" put it, this waste of space.

If this was "the perfect opportunity to photo profile a new space" why was it so poorly done?

perhaps, since you seem to have a very specific and determined vision of what an online picture blog is supposed to look like, you could create the one you've spent countless hours imagining and send it to the Alibi for publishing?

What if others happen to think that typing comments lambasting a story that isn't really a story at all is a waste of space? Hmmm?

  • ahhh!  [ Thu Feb 11 2010 1:18 AM ]

oh mr. (?) foxmcCloud you are so on point and funny. two of my favorite things.

and who knows... maybe I will....

(on the other hand. just so you know, the above non-article was in the paper, which is why it got my panties in a bunch. I just feel like we should give a proper "Hell Yeahs!" to Joe, Lucky and co. for the effort put out to bring us summin different ANd enjoyable)
