Music to Your Ears

This Week's Super-Gay Music Section

When it rains it pours. And sometimes it rains men. (Hallelujah!) You might notice this week's section is a little gayer than usual and that's partially because both Venus DeMars and Hunx are gracing Albuquerque with their fabulous presences this week. On top of that, I was introduced to a mind-blowing hip-hop jam genre: sissy bounce (see more in Sonic Reducer). Bounce music—a filthy, dirty New Orleans-born rap style that's heavy on call-and-response—has been around since the early '90s and many of its faces happen to be gay. Top underground acts include transsexual rapper Katey Red, as well as Sissy Nobby and Big Freedia. This is not to say that bounce isn't hetero—Juvenile's "Back That Ass Up" is the genre's big hit, for example. For all things bounce, go to nolabounce.com. For all things gay and hip-hop take a spin around gayhiphop.com.

KUNM Seeks Jazzy Host

Are you versed in the avant-garde, contemporary end of jazz? KUNM 89.9 FM is currently seeking a committed host for “The House That Jazz Built” which airs Sunday nights from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. Applications must be at the station by Jan. 31 and should include a cover letter, playlist and aircheck or demo 60 to 80 minutes long. Drop off or send them to KUNM-FM 89.9, MSCO6 3520, Oñate Hall, 1 University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, N.M. 87131. Call 277-4806 or visit kunm.org for further information.

“Zero Hour Squared Radio”

Hurrah for more local music on the airwaves. On Friday nights from 11 p.m. to midnight, Mike Trujillo, host of Channel 27’s “Zero Hour Squared,” now also hosts a radio version of the show on KNML 610 AM The Sports Animal. Trujillo describes “Zero Hour Squared Radio” as an “eclectic music-/sports-/community-oriented show.” He will also play local music (and maybe some Glen Campbell, too), which is where you come in. If you’re in a local band of any genre and want to hear your songs played on the radio, get in touch with Trujillo. His number is 319-7866, or you can send him an e-mail at zerohoursquared@hotmail.com

Slaying Satanical Scooters

There wasn’t enough space to cover the many cool musical happenings and goings-on this week. Special shout-outs go to Friday’s all-ages Scrams / Dirty Novels / Five Star Motelles show at VooDoo Scooters, and Bud Melvin’s performance at The Rio Grande Satanical Gardens on Saturday. As always, check the music calendar for a day-by-day play-by-play.
