Music Chambers

Living in the Past

Ye olde record collection
David Duncan
Ye olde record collection

Ten-year Burque resident and human resourcer David Duncan is the owner of this fine antique music device. Via e-communique he discusses stereo equipment and century-old recordings.

What kind of music do you listen to?

I like most kinds of music, but mostly I listen to classical and jazz.

Where did you get your equipment?

I bought this in New York City from a gentleman who rescues old phonographs from attics and basements and restores them to playing condition.

What is it?

It is a 1916 model Victrola.

Do you play any instruments or perform?

I have played a number of instruments over the years, but devote most of my time these days to the viola da gamba (another old, rather archaic instrument, I'm afraid).

What do you like about older devices?

I find it very soothing to listen to music that was recorded nearly 100 years ago the way it was originally heard. I even find comfort in the pops, clicks and other surface noise that is inherently found on these records.

Anything else you'd like to add?

I also have modern stereo equipment, which is what I listen to most of the time. It becomes a bit tiring to have to turn or change the record every three to five minutes.

Show us where you listen or play by emailing cassyle@alibi.com, “music chambers” in the subject line, or by posting photos to the Weekly Alibi’s facebook page (facebook.com/weeklyalibi).
