Music to Your Ears

Nights of the Living Cover Bands

Dress up as your favorite rock star and revel in redux this weekend. As Halloween approaches, local bands are readying costumes and perfecting versions of others' songs. On Friday, Oct. 26, suit up and head to Low Spirits (2823 Second NW) at 7 p.m. for the first evening of cover madness. Seven acts—including Double Plow as Ike & Tina Turner and Mrdrbrd as Hall & Oates—take on new personas. Starting at 6 p.m., the doppelganger fun continues on Saturday at Launchpad (618 Central SW), when 12 groups give the sincerest form of flattery a go. Particularly intriguing combinations include Cowboys and Indian as Jimi Hendrix and High Iron as X. Both shows are 21-and-over and cost five bucks.

Loudness War

If harsh noise is your thing, Small Engine Gallery (1413 Fourth SW) has your spooky party needs covered. Touting mandatory costumes and five-minute sets of ear-splitting noise by a slew of local noisemakers—including William Fowler Collins, John Dieterich, Christian Pincock, Alchemical Burn, Drake Hardin and TAHNZzz—this show promises lasting memories and ringing ears. On Saturday, Oct. 27, don't forget to pack some hearing protection and find a spot in your costume to stow the five-dollar cover. The amps crank up to 11 promptly at 9 p.m.

Balkans Halloween

Celebrate Halloween with an honest-to-goodness Balkans wedding band, Kabile, and Land of Enchantment heroes A Hawk and A Hacksaw. Learn firsthand what a gaida, tapan, kaval and gadulka are on Wednesday at Las Puertas (1512 First NW). This one’s a family friendly music pick; bring the kids along to experience transnational sights and sounds. A Hawk and A Hacksaw took their musical journeying from New Mexico to the Balkans and are prolific collaborators, so performing with Kabile in Burque will feel like the best of both worlds. The all-ages fiesta begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $18 on the day of the show, but you can save three bucks by buying them early.
