Music to Your Ears
Laissez les bons temps rouler
The good times, they will roll at the Mod-i-gras Ball. DJ Cassyle—who hails from the Pelican State—will spin from her collection of vintage Louisiana dance tracks, Northern soul and shiny party tunes. DJs Bea and Mello also soundtrack your pre-Lent swerve. Don something festive on Saturday, Feb. 2, and point your Chelsea boots toward Blackbird Buvette (509 Central NW). The needle drops at 10 p.m., and admission to the 21-and-over shindig is free. Hit up La Quiche Parisienne, Le Paris or Pro's Ranch Market to score a king cake, cher.
Party at ground zero
Fusing funk, hard rock, punk and ska, Fishbone's catalog can't be described as lacking diversity. This party has been going on since the early '80s and shows no sign of slowing down. Slip into your skankin' shoes and blaze a trail to Sister (413 Central NW) on Monday, Feb. 4. Making eye contact with bassist John Norwood-Fisher and singer/saxophonist Angelo Moore alone is worth the $10 admission. Burqueño reggae-rock sextet ¡Revíva! and self-described “New Mexifunk” outfit Da Bruddah Project open. If the name Fishbone sounds only slightly familiar, know that the group’s inspired influence informed the work of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Jane’s Addiction, for starters.
Cattail tea party
Clare Hubbard, aka Caethua, conjures witchy psych-folk from field recordings of swamps, fields and forests, simmering synth and strings and even rusted pots and pans. Wilderness guitarist Colin McCann's solo project, The Lord Dog Bird, serves up rarefied lo-fi indie folk. McCann has released one self-titled album on Jagjaguwar, and it's earnest and crush-inducing. What it lacks in differentiation, it more than makes up for with its deliciously fuzzy, emotive anthems. On Wednesday, Feb. 6, sample the sonic wares of Caethua and The Lord Dog Bird, along with local heavy classical project Cthulha, Uroboros (Heather Trost's solo debut), lounge noise duo Dungeon Broads and effect-heavy noise act Pak. This strange recital at Synchro Studio (512-B Yale SE) begins at 8:30 p.m., and admission is $7.
