Four Up

Messages for the future, heroic after-party, noisemakers near and far and in the key of gris-gris

Denis Kolokol
Denis Kolokol

Messages for the future

Hailing from Kraków, Poland, electronic and electro-acoustic composer and performer Denis Kolokol combines non-intersecting and even oppositional elements in his work. Kolokol is in Burque thanks to a UNM International Collaborative Art Program artist residence. After weeks spent assisting electronic arts students with creating scientific data visualizations and messages for future beings (human, alien or A.I.), he shares his intriguing work with the masses. Experience Kolokol’s “Sympli Romatikó” at Spirit Abuse (1103 Fourth Street NW) on Thursday, June 20. This free, all-ages concert will be so very sci-fi. Kolokol’s virtual world—with its simplified physical laws—materializes at 9 p.m.

Albuquerque Comic Expo

Heroic after-party

Even superheroes need to get down every now and then, and antiheroes are notoriously prone to partying. Whether you’re aligned with the forces of good, evil or the gray area between, don your finest comic duds on Saturday, June 22, and head to Sister (407 Central NW) for the Albuquerque Comic Expo after-party. Americana foursome The Saltine Ramblers, hip-hop trio Darbstar and electro-roots duo Todd and the Fox provide sonic stimulation, and a bevy of local burlesque mavens bring the “nerdlesque.” The door swings wide at 8 p.m., and tickets to the 21-and-over soirée are $7, but show your ACE ticket stub to save two bucks. If you’re a member of the swanky VIP ACE club, admission is gratis.

Joey Molinaro

Noisemakers near and far

Brooklynite Joey Molinaro purveys self-described “acoustic grind violin,” and it’s phenomenal. Strains of Appalachian folk two-step with Eastern influence and a DIY, punk aesthetic in Molinaro’s simultaneously rhythmic and discordant compositions. The last-minute addition of noise-freakers from Austin, Texas—notably Palus Somni (Dakota Hogback and Aunt’s Analog) and Musturd Betchballz (Dromez, Breakdancing Ronald Reagan and Power Monster)—makes this Sunday, June 23, gig at The Tannex (1417 Fourth Street SW) a serious shouldn’t-miss. The all-ages concert kicks off at 8 p.m., and there’s a suggested donation of more than $5.45 and less than $7.39. Que cute!

The Voodoo Organist
The Voodoo Organist

In the key of gris-gris

You would never know that the Voodoo Organist calls sunny SoCal home. Head conjure man Scott Wexton’s 1949 Hammond CV organ—the first Hammond organ to feature Vibrato and VibratoChorus—and vintage Moog Taurus bass pedals call to mind a sweaty makeout session in an abandoned church in the Deep South. This is some sexy, tremulant stuff, y’all. Wexton and company do that hoodoo live at Low Spirits (2823 Second Street NW) on Monday, June 24. The 21-and-over show starts to tremble and moan at 9 p.m, and admission is $5. Howlin’ Wolves, Aaron Hamre and The Mark McKee Experience open.
