Rock Reads

Rabid and Contagious

The Big Takeover turns 30

For 30 years, Jack Rabid has been our most passionate, intelligent and informed music writer bar none. Others have been more gonzo (Lester Bangs, Creem), more academic (Greil Marcus, Rolling Stone) or carried a bigger punk rock sneer (Kickboy Face, Slash), but Rabid has heart. His long-running fanzine-turned-slick-mag The Big Takeover is, in fact, subtitled “Music With Heart.”

Roñoso, doing Roñoso-type things

Seitan, Not Satan

Roñoso releases a record

Some people just get it wrong. If the boys of Roñoso were walking down the street, mothers would pitch their babies into traffic before exposing them to the gnarly dreadlocks and general scruffiness of Greg (bass, vocals), Miles (guitar, vocals) and Mike (drums). I don’t want to blow their cover, but despite gutwrenching vocals and heavy crustcore music, the three are some of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet. Time and again I’ve seen Roñoso volunteer for the sacrificial opening slot so touring bands can play to the larger late-arriving crowd.

Do the Kurt Russell

Kurt Russell is Snake in John Carpenter’s early ’80s dystopian portrayal of 1997, Escape From New York. Mods dance before a psychedelic background below him. What it all means is unclear. The facts are this: On Wednesday, July 28, at 8 p.m. lo-fi electro synthpop band The Gatherers releases an album titled Kurt Russell. Opening for the Burque band are Portland, Ore. electro acts Fleshtone and Prizm (learn more about the latter in this week’s Song Roulette). The all-ages show happens at The Kosmos (1715 Fifth Street NW). Admission is $5. (Jessica Cassyle Carr)

Sonic Reducer

Grupo Fantasma El Existential · Daniel Francis Doyle We Bet Our Money On You · The Whispering Tree Go Call the Captain

Austin-based Daniel Francis Doyle is a one-man hurricane, crooning, whining and roaring his way into your heart. The emotional riot We Bet Our Money On You is two parts DIY punk, one part math geek’s basement project. He uses carefully layered guitar from a Line 6 loop box and crashing drums to support his vocal experimenting. The way he holds vowels, randomly changes pitch or suddenly yells at the top of his lungs—all over increasingly violent percussion—is playful weirdness. Sometimes the music is jarring, but Doyle’s voice has an undercurrent of raw honesty that streaks the songs with softness.

EVENT HORIZON (Friday, Oct 9)

Can I Get a Hallelujah?

Hozier • blues, indie, soul

You probably remember that in January a song filled the radio that made you say amen more than you had since going to church with your family as a child. Hozier’s “Take Me To Church” was in the top 100 singles in the U.S. for three weeks. His soft acoustic style paired with sorrowful crooning seemed to be just what the United States wanted…

Snowy Egret Has Landed

Myra Melford’s Snowy Egret • piano, jazz, composer

Pianist Myra Melford, a Guggenheim fellow who specializes in cross-genre, postmodern musical deconstruction, performs with her ensemble Snowy Egret at Outpost Performance Space on Friday, Oct. 16. Basing her work in a plethora of quintessential artistic experiences that encompasses everyone and everything from Rumi to Japanese Butoh and Meso-American Indigenous traditions, Melford brings a deft touch to her dream-like musical explorations. She’ll be in the company of instrumentalists Ron Miles on trumpet, guitarist Liberty Ellman, bassist Stomu Takeishi and drummer Tyshawn Sorey. Together they’ll perform work both translucent and opaque as they transport listeners to a world without sonic boundaries. Tickets range from $15-20 for this transcendent trip.
