Sabertooth Cavity

New Mexico band releases noise freak-out En Lak Ech

Don’t limit it by calling it music, man. Jazz derangements, electronic debris and heaving melts of guitar are just part of it. What Sabertooth Cavity offers up with its first album, En Lak Ech, is a little more meta. Or a little more Dada. However you want to take it.

Casablanca

New Downtown music venue opens inside Hotel Andaluz

It bummed me out when La Posada de Albuquerque closed in 2005. The lobby bar was one of my favorite places in Albuquerque—it was an elegant, jazz-filled, brown-and-white respite from the Downtown riffraff, the flashing neons, the ill-fitting fashions and questionable taste in mechanical beats. Little did I know that four years later the 1939 building—New Mexico native Conrad Hilton’s fourth hotel, and first outside of Texas—would open anew, having been reinvented as green boutique lodging. Hotel Andaluz not only has 107 rooms and suites, but also a fine Mediterranean-inspired restaurant (Lucia), rooftop bar (Ibiza) and, as of the end of January, a live music venue called Casablanca.

The Dirtbombs Party Store · Ryan Cohan Another Look · Toro Y Moi Underneath The Pine

Music reviews in 100 words or less

Named after the Detroit area's ubiquitous party stores (which sound like a place to buy balloons and bubblegum, but run more along the lines of cigs, malt liquor and bulletproof glass), The Dirtbombs’ new album is less soul, more dub and just as pass-out-in-the-back-of-the-car-with-no-pants-on rock and roll as any previous release. Party Store is all covers of Detroit techno tunes from the ’80s, and it sounds kinda like the PiL masterpiece Metal Box. For real. Buy the traditional format and it comes on three records just like Metal Box did. Sexiest record of 2011, so far. (GP)

Chevelle • alternative • Black Map • Dinosaur Pile-Up • rock

Chevelle, an indie band from the Midwest, portrays their hard sound—expressed with exasperated vocals, a muscular rhythms and chunky guitar riffs that repeatedly drift off into tangential melodies—as an artful thing, comparable to '90s peers like Tool…

EVENT HORIZON (Friday, Jan 27)

Go Like the River

Silver String Band • Americana, blues • Squash Blossom Boys • bluegrass, folk

The Albuquerque Folk Festival has ebbed and flowed over the years, presumably in a fashion similar to the mythically winding rivers often rhapsodized about in American folk lore, literature and music. The ascension of the late, great Gary Libman to the presidency of the festival's board of directors provided structure and growth that has practically guaranteed the source of all the good ole music will never run dry. Still, given the economic realities in our great nation and the costs of producing such a successful regional music fest, a benefit concert is often in order, to keep things flowing, as it were. With that metaphor in mind, check out the concert featuring two of Burque's authentic Americana units, the Silver String Band and The Squash Blossom Boys when they perform on Friday, Jan. 27. A portion of the proceeds from this 21+ holy hootenanny beginning at 9pm will benefit the festival before it's 2017 iteration comes around on June 3, 2017. Tickets are $5.
